| That trans looks just like one we swapped into Carter's Jake except that one doesnt have the hi/lo range. It has the shift collar system kinda like an FNR so no shift keys. Also like Rich said all the bolts are on the bottom, which is kind of a pain hahaha. We will find out. I'll bust into it in a couple months. The serial # badge is missing from the tractor so I don't know exactly which year yet. I have done 0 investigating at this point. LOL It sure is a bit smaller than I thought. About a foot shorter frame than the Murray GT for next year. Frame has a bend in the back, but it should be super easy to straighten out and I can easilly brace it. As well as the front grill. | |

| Assuming the engine is factory, should be pretty easy. I assume its a briggs. Pretty sure you know how to read those, but to everyone that doesn't, the year is the last two digits in the "Code" set of numbers. This applies to all briggs engines that I know of. Don't know about kohler, Tecumseh, or Kawasaki. EDIT: on second thought, that is a Tecumseh. The intake is on the bottom and exhaust on top, Briggs are opposite of that. Anyone know how to read Tecumseh tags? | |

| The shroud has the #s on it. I got it pulled off tonight. Looking into the #'s I think it is Tecumseh. There was crud between the starter and flywheel causing the grind. Not filled with water as I thought, I think it is Gas coming out. That is fixable. Also, this old engine appears to have really good compression. Pretty hard to one hand it. I may try to fix this engine? See how it goes. | |

You can read the Tecumseh codes, I don't remember how though.

| Just visually, this thing looks to be a 917.255274, (1979-81?) but that model is suppose to have a BRIGGS in it not a Tecumseh? This has a Tecumseh, 143336022 SER 3165D. That would be a June 14, 1983 Engine. SER "3" year ending number 165=day of year, to my knowledge.
Issue, the newer ones have sloped fenders, this one has flat fenders. All the flat fenders I have seen with tecumseh do not have the transaxle I have, but a transmission with chain.
EDIT: I am thinking engine swap somewhere down the line. GRR... Model plate is missing from the tractor.

Sorry Allis, I think I have decided to do a solid axle on the little craftsman on the right. Widen it a bit. Maybe go with a speed type build. On the left I am still torn on the front suspension. Neither will have rear suspension.

why do you guys do solid axles on speed builds? ist that super sketchy when turning corners? my mud mower skreetches when is turns corners and it isnt even pulley swapped.

| Because the axles are 1 inch verses 3/4 inch and are wider, also the gearboxes have no differential to break and you can play with the sprocket sizes to give more torque or speed for different driving conditions. Its just more durable than having a differential and lets the axle be higher up in the frame for more stability

| But i personally like tranaxles for mudding because you can put more torque on the input shaft and case than a gearbox, . i have blown two gearboxes because of having too aggressive tread and to much hp with very little belt slippage , so they do have limitations but for racing i consider them a better solution | |

I thought you meant that you guys were solid axle swapping transaxles. I see what you mean by more options as far as speed and good brakes go. I got a kinda neat setup in my sears 88 series that im taking apart where there is a 4 speed foote transmission that is chain driven to a rear axle that has a small little diff in the middle of it. im planning on using it when i make my speed/rat rod build.

| I am still planning. Biggest issue I have for next year is budget, since I am planning 2 builds. I think I will keep it unlocked for now. I will bust into that trans. I do know I am thinking fixed front axle, wider. I would like to figure out how to widen the back just a bit as well without compromising the transaxle. | |

| Ah, I think I figured out the hardest part of next year's build-off entries. Names! I have them stored away so I do not forget them. I have toyed with some other names, but I think I have that nailed now. I'll give those names out when I enter the build-off! I'll give a little suspense! | |

I read that the ideal angle is 10 degrees.
