Hello,
i have a Murray 11/36 with a Tecumseh Peerless 700, a 5 speed Transmission/Gearbox. Im gonna build a offroad mower out of my Murray, my question now is: can i use the perless 700 for a offroad/Mud mower? What are the Pros and what are the Cons? The motor is a 11hp briggs. Imma use a reinforced Heavy Duty 428 Motocross chain to drive the rear "gokart" axle. Im also gonna make a Gas and brake Pedal for the mower, so i have Clutch, Brake and gas Pedals. Do you guys think the Peerless 700 is gonna survive long or is it just not the right gearbox to use in a offroad mower? I also want to slighty pulley swap it of course.

Thanks for your help and/or advice.

literally, as a general rule, if you don't know if it's tough enough just drive it until you destroy it and then (to use a liberal term lol) "build back better" if you kinda get what I'm saying, other then that peerless 700s in my experience have been pretty decent, I personally hate the inline shifter, makes it stupid hard to find gears but they do shift nice and seem to be pretty reliable if you don't abuse them too much

@TechnoChicken
Thanks for your reply.
Im gonna do it like you said.
Its better to try it out like that and then see what happens.
I have the peerless 700 gearbox (3 speed) on one of my karts, too. It has a push mower engine (Honda gcv135 with china quad carburator). Works GREAT.

From what I've heard they're really tough and can hold up to alot of abuse especially when prepped for it.

I’ve heard good things. I’d sooner take a 700 over an aluminum transaxle (even an 820) because the axle housings can snap under shock loading. Live axles don’t have that problem as much because the axle can flex a little bit and be ok. You can also fine tune the final drive ratio of the chain so you aren’t overspeeding the transmission too much. Racers love them because of that.
