tire swap question

I have a question that has been bothering me. If i have stock 18x9.5-8 tires can i swap them with 22x11-8? Will they fit with no problem?

Sure can nothing a little stretching can hurt lol. People run 22x12-8 on 8"x10" rims all the time.

Any suggestions on what type of tires to get

I live in south texas. So no snow down here

they will fit the rim fine... you may have fender clearance issues though

Ill cut it if need be. But i have quite a few inches of clearance already.

How are the sizes done. My tire is 18x9.5 i understand i have an 8inch rim but what about the 9.5? It will be 11inches across. Won't that mess with the bead

so long as you use a tube you wont have bead issues as far as I know the tube will keep pressure against the entire sidewall not just at the bead so it will lock it in a bit better just dont overpressurize lol for texas I think youd want a sand tire more than a mud tire though I have seen some nasty mud pits down there lol

Im close to Galveston but its all mud swamp type stuff around me. Not much sand. I don't want to snap a transaxle because of tires to aggressive.

not sure what axles your running but I doubt your going to snap one because of overly aggressive tires personally I like ags but thats because I come from a farming community you may like the kenda bearclaws though they seem to do ok

the 9.5 is TREAD width. Rarely is rim and tread width the same (it makes seating the bead difficult, and leaves the rim outside of the bead more vulnerable to rocks and such, if that makes any sense to ya. Most 12 inch wide treads are on 6 or 7 inch wide rims. The 18 is of course tire height (thought that is arbitrary, as a narrower rim will make the tire taller, and a wider one will make the tire shorter generally speaking)

They will fit fine, when you inflate they will pop on. I think the above mix it up with a wider rim than tire.

Like I mounted a 18x7.5x8 to a 9x8" rim, then you will have to stretch the bead (rubber on each side) out 1" for it to bite and seat properly.

Like you suggested it will work fine.

You'll have NO problem putting 22x11-8 tires on your stock rims. Many of us have done it.

I'm going to take a moment here to explain standard tire sizing, and maybe clarify a point or two. Let's use the 22x11-8 as the example.

* First number is nominal inflated height. So, mounted and aired up will be around 22" tall. AROUND. This stuff is NEVER written in stone and rarely ever is exactly the advertised size

* Second number is the section width. NOT the rim width! Section width is the IDEAL width from sidewall to sidewall at the widest point. A properly mounted and inflated tire has a sidewall profile that kinda looks like this: ------>( ) So, your 11" is at the widest. Be aware of the fact that due to several factors including rim dimensions, that 11" is not written in stone either!

* Third number is rim diameter, and the only number you can actually count on. 8" is 8" no matter HOW you slice it...

* Remember not to confuse rim width with section width. They are NOT the same. If you were to put your 22x11-8 tire on an 11" wide rim, you'd have to stretch it quite a bit. It would go, but look rather silly. Ideally, you'd want a rim that's at least 2-3" narrower than the section width of the tire.

Part of the confusion is that these are different than car or motorcycle tire measures. Most vehicle tires are radial belted, and use a metric standard of sizing. For example, one of my favorite sizes for a mid size car is

245 60 R 15

245 = section width (in millimeters)

60 = the percentage of tire height to width. From rim to tread, the tire is 60 percent as high as it is wide

R = Radial ply tire

15 = rim diameter (in inches)  

Note that there is no nominal inflated diameter markings on automobiles.

Bias ply tires are usually done the same, but with standard (read inch) measurements

For example 9.50 16.5 8 ply

9.50 = section width

16.5 = rim diameter

8 ply = the number of belts wound around the tire circumferentially

I mention these automotive measurements because some of use 12, 13, 15 and even 16 inch rims on our tractors. AG tires come in standard lawn tractor sizes, with tire markings as Doc laid out, and on larger rim sizes you may find them in bias ply, or metric markings. 13, 14, 15 and 16 inch rims are open to the whole auto mud tire arena, and may be marked with metric sizes, or bias ply.

These are fairly cheap but work well Duro Mud & Sand
I'd go with these they cost a lil more but I think they'd work better Mud Lites

Something else you might consider: Weight of the tire. The AG's and Bear Claw tires are very heavy.

Mudlites are much lighter (that's why they put "lite" in the name).

Check the weights while you look through tires. I did this a long time ago when I was looking for the lightest mud tire for my ATV. I ended up with a set of Mudlites.
