my wiring harness went bad over the winter, should i just purchase the wires myself and run them or buy another wiring harness? keep in mind not the original engine it came with.

you could probably make your own rather easily. getting a new one would probably suck your wallet dry. really, theres only like 4 wires you NEED. one to the starter solenoid, a kill wire, one for headlights (if you have them) and one for the charging system

Yup- Will's right. The electrical system on these engines can be easily simplified down to nearly nothing.

i have two plugs coming off the motor, i believe one is for headlights, and the other goes directly under the carb. im curious as to what the plug for the carb is for and if i need to cut the plugs off the olde harness to use them as well.

i presume this is a newer engine? sounds like that wire going to the carb is the fuel cutoff solenoid. there is a thread on here on how to disable it. basically you take it off, cut the top and youre good to go. then you can just disregard the wire. refer to that thread though. i can put the link in here if you want

I think that the other wire is the the kill switch.
To check take of the fly wheel cover and check if it is running off the ignition coil.
When your engines running you should be able to touch the wire to ground and it should kill the engine Very Happy

I have wired up my lawnmower with a single kill switch and push button ignition, everything works. except when I hook up the wires for the charging part, (wiring going from the generator to the positive side of the solenoid), and when I do this it arcs as if their is a power draw somewhere. I've had this happen on another tractor and never understood the problem or why it's doing it. Any help would be appreciated,

Are you sure you're delivering DC to the battery? If you're trying to use the AC lighting wire or your diode is missing, it could be interesting.
