I had a 18 HP Opposed that was only running on one cylinder .(9 HP) so if I put in a smaller engine, would it be enough to get my tractor around? Just for ridding around the lot

how small are we talking? i'd just figure out why it wasnt firing on both cylinders. probably a bad sparkplug or ignition coil

Yeah it might have weak or no spark and thats why its running on one cylinder. Pull your plugs out crank it over and look for spark if there isn't any try sanding your magneto if that doesn't work you might need to replace it.

Valve seats sent easy at all, especially on a flat head, you need a shop to press the old ones out and press, clearance and check the new seats. Witch will cost more then a used twin.

I got a push mower from my neibor that might do just fine. Is it a bad idea?

If valve seat is done, I am sure your mechanic wants 1,400 to 1,800 to repair the engine, follow the mechanics advice, he knows more than you do about heads, my friend in a auto parts store sold 20 heads a week for years now.

Actually, you've got less than 9 horsepower on tap. You've got to figure in all that drag from pulling around the piston and stuff on the dead cylinder. Jest sayin.
