Hunting season approaching

with that said....i wanna get into hunting this year...white tail and some turkey...i've been hunting before but mainly squirrel with a 22 semi auto...with that said aswell which gun would be a good for dear and turkey a 12 gauge for turkey season then for dear season 12 gauge with a slug? jw cause im not to familiar with guns at all all ive ever owned is 22's and 410s

if you start shootin slugs out your shot gun its going to ***** your pattern all up, you would be better off getting a 99 dollar single shot 12 ga from a pawn shop for turkey, they usually hold a good pattern for 25-30 yards and then a 30-30 is pretty easy to come by for dear hunting

ty richie thats what i was thinking im pretty good with both just wanted some other opinions on this topic i dont have much time left either after the build to start getting ready for it i want a fresh turkey and deer this year and ill be happy

for that matter, i have a rossi matched pair that is a 410 and a 22, they come with both barrels and you can inter change them,

rossi makes good reliable guns, and they are accurate,

You can get slug barrels for some shotguns. Remington 870 have a couple different barrels.
Cant go wrong with a decent bolt action though.



I need to remember to get my doe tag this year....

get a Mossberg 500 or Maverick 88 12GA. Get the one with two barrels. A 28" vent rib with chokes for hunting and the 18.5" smoothbore for home defense. They are all you need in a gun. Good times.

i just got my tags today, 12 gauge for turkey, no doubt. Depending on laws and area, (this is just me) if its wooded area with little fields go 3030, if ur shooting across fields for deer, 308. 30-06 bigger calibers. i use a 3030. its works great for 100 or less yards. it WILL work passed that, but ajusting to the guessed yardage gets interesting, shooting straight a deer at bout 250 yards with a 3030 got me nowhere lol, For the shotgun, i got my shotgun for 179 dollars at walmart. Its a H&R 1871 pump 12 guage, little on the heavy side but i love it.I dont think you can beat a pump 12 guage like that for the price, it aint the greatest but itll shoot perfectly and percisly, thats my 2 cents

I am mildly confused... your either talking about shooting shot through a rifled barrel or slugs through a smoothbore? I have a remington 870 that I have put probably around 1500 rounds through ~500 slugs and 1000 various shot loads. All through a smoothbore, I have also owned a mossberg 930 spx that was the bees knees but I got bored with it so got the 870.

Both shot slugs beautifully and were good to 100 yards with the ghost ring, shot was once again beautiful 870 moreso because I could choke it real nice and blast holes in doors But my point is in the multitude of rounds I have fired I have never had any issues with my patterns changing from shot to slug the only way it is going to differ is through the normal differences that not every pattern is going to be exactly the same but they will be near identical in size including #00

I will note though remington switched steel providers recently and lost a bit of quality there then changed their bluing process which also lost quality so if you buy new... Don't buy remington.

shooting slugs through my mossberg really messed up my pattern, dont know why, but it did, it was fine, then i shot some slugs through it deer hunting, and not it wont hold a pattern for *****

Unfortunate. I thought they were starting to get that under control... not entirely sure.
Watch out for "marlingtons" too if your thinking about a 30-30.

I think rossi makes a decent lever 30-30. Or just get a nice old Winchester...

@beal No they want to maximize profits and from the looks of it the only effective way to fix the rust issues is just get the metals reblued or coated

The 30-30 is a good deer rifle but I adore nato calibers for hunting 5.56 (.223) is effective to 300 yards (yeah I know people can shoot further but were talking hunting rounds not fmj) with barely any noticable recoil and a light rifle. The tried and true 7.62x51 (.308) takes care of the bigger or further away shots. Something that is somewhat noteworthy for beginners to the larger calibers is the .308 shoots flatter than the 30/06 and the 30/30 therefore if you are making longer shots it requires less holdover and or calculation which simplifies your hunt and makes for a happy camper

i use an old marlin model 336cs lever action 3030 and its perfect

im to cheap to buy one, and to be honest, i barely use that shotgun, other than to shoot slugs or buckshot, i do most of my huntin with my rossi, its a 410, but hell, i use it for everything, and besides, ive got more turkeys with a 22 than a shot gun anyways

12ga ammo is easier to find than any other, at this point in time. Been a while since I have seen even 22 on the shelf in the local stores...

Gotta get there early. We have gotten several thousand rounds just by getting a box here and there in the morning. In truth, that is more than I would ever need... thats without plinking... gotta have room for that.

And then you got these morons buyin it up and selling it 2, 3 times what they payed... errg.  

Check this site out, its constantly checking and comparing the prices of a bunch of different ammunition online. Doesnt compensate for shipping though, the spam cans I got were about $40 or 50 cheaper than buying from dunhams I found on there.

thanks for all ya's inputs i've asked several people and few hunting things on fb and never got a reply idk if they think im just dumb or just dont wanna help out lol i've got a friend who uses his shot gun with slugs for deer and regular shells for turkey season all i have right now is a merlin .22 nice gun pretty accurate aswell tho i have never field dressed one so imma try to find a buddy who know's how to do that so i can learn..i had to take the hunters ed class 3 years ago or longer here in ky if your born after i think 76 your required to take the hunters ed class which is free but i love me some deer meat and fresh turkey...in the next few weeks ill see what i can find of course the price is key for me too if it gets the job done and its cheap im happy but well see and i highly thank all ya for your inputs and suggestion most help i've ever had far as asking about guns and which ones would be best

I've been noticing that Federal has been getting cheap with how much powder they put in their .22 shells, probably so they can put more boxes on the shelf. Even after I spent a good couple hours cleaning and oiling up everything so it was silky smooth it still wasn't enough for the return. Used some Eley stuff and it worked just fine.
