PostSubject: gear stress test video?   gear stress test video? Icon_minitimeDecember 22nd 2014, 2:33 pm

So here lately I have been seeing and hearing a lot on transmission gears and what they can take. Well I have a kinda rusty set from a 4360 that will likely never see the inside of a case again (I have a few full sets rolling around) so I was wondering if anyone was interested in a video of gear stress testing. Tests would likely involve seeing what it takes to strip and or blow up sets for instance 3rd and 4th gear seeing as that's what most of us race with :p input is appreciated just curious if anyone has had the same idea.

Sure. Why not. Do you have an accurate way of quantifying the results?

If you got accurate way of testing I'd send you some 800 series and 920 gears. Maybe a foote gearbox set too.

well therein lies some of the testing issues I was thinking of testing it by making a little housing of sorts have one gear stationary and another pivot so you could test the load it takes before it either cracks apart or shreds teeth off wouldnt really take much other than some fab work and maybe a safety cage or something >.> but a digital scale and a pivot bar should do for measuring Ill have to look around see how they test them in industry.

If you made the pivot bar 12" long you would be measuring in lb-ft fairly accurately, or longer and just do the math.

well its all in how much weight I want to put on them :p if I use a short bar that means more weight and Id be closer to the point of ouch longer bar means more math and possibly less ouch so I am kinda leaning toward longer bar or good ol hydraulics lol something like that anyway

What about trying them IN the transaxle? Like "freezing" up the input shaft somehow, and externally locking (Kinda like a giant U shape, so they're basically "locked" And using a torque wrench to see if the shafts pop, or the gears strip. Nice way to see where the weaker components are on our transaxles.

Well the problem with doing it in the case is the case itself will likely pop before your gears go I think doc can attest to this and your shafts are a lot less likely to break those are hardened steel vs sintered steel

Is'nt that the whole point? to see what transaxle is the strongest.

Or just take a trans and do 1:1 pullry ratio and put a ridiculously big engine on it and do WOT clutch dumps.................kinda radical idea

@TD well we all kinda already know what transmission is the strongest thats going to be the sears high/low or peerless 633 or the 820 The testing is more to see what kind of forces the gears can take before they pop so you have something of a baseline for how much torque you can push through them.

From what I have seen and heard though it is really all in what you want to do with them but usually you only really need 20 hp I have seen a lot of crazy stuff done with just a 20 v twin :p even a 18.5 oppy lol this means you two stretch and trb!

@ck that would be the "well I blew up the gear pack but I think I had to much power!" method :p I want to do it scientifically not so much how hard they can engage and survive but at what point do the gears become overloaded and shatter. I am not positive on this but I think I would blow a lot of shift keys doing that too and I dont really have the patience to rebuild trannys all day :p
