Its pretty easy in maine, vermont, and new hampshire I "hear" I know its been done in maine by a few folks
anyone willing to attempt it? I can get you a pic of the serial tag, or anything else you need as long as the tractor doesnt need to physically be there and inspected
I will cover registration fees for you, Then once registered you "sell" it to me for $100. You pocket the $100 and I transfer the registration to ohio

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead to add some relevant information I got today! This may not apply to everyone but it will give you a place to start and see if it's possible in your area! Might even alert a MIA member or 2 in the process! Lol
I came across this thread several weeks back and it got me thinking... almost all the trails in my area are regulated by various dirt bike, ATV and snowmobile clubs and they are randomly patrolled by the OPP. I figured if I'm being respectful, not driving a tractor that's falling apart and have taken the effort to make sure I have a proper spark arrestor then I probably won't be given too much trouble but what if... I could make it legit? Then I have no worries! I started looking through my townships "off highway vehicle" bylaws and found these...
Hmm this isn't going to work...
Nor will this... I don't plan on hauling cargo
But then THIS! BINGO! The possible way in!
Some people build and register their own machines, so how to go about that? Well I got the info today while I was at Service Ontario! I was speaking with the Clerk who, has the power to create and issue VIN numbers, this same lady is the one who registered my 1969 Honda Z50 as an ON ROAD motorcycle because I got the official paperwork strait from Honda stating that it is! That's neither here nor there though... back on topic! Lol
I told her what I had, what I was doing and if it would be possible to get a registration for a lawn tractor... she said yes! All I have to do is have it inspected by a licensed mechanic that's versed in such things to prove it complies with the safety standards set forth, bring in the paperwork and they will issue me a VIN for it!
The next step will be to talk with my insurance company and see of they are willing to enter a non standard VIN to give me insurance on it, if they're willing to play ball then it's 100% possible! If not they can hit the bricks I'll go elsewhere that will, I haven't been happy with them for awhile most recently when they told me they would indeed insure the Z50 then renaged on it the next day!
Well there's some tidbits for all the dreamers (such as myself) out there!
That’s pretty cool! I’ve always thought it would be so cool to have my tractors actually registered and legal with the state, but NC has no requirements for ATV registration and all that sort of stuff. Matter of fact, all I have to do is put an orange triangle on the back of it and that actually makes it road legal lol. It qualifies as farm equipment which makes it legal for secondary public road use and/or trail use. So there’s just absolutely no reason to register them here.

You guys are lucky…here in NY there’s really no point cause everyone believes that if you make atv trails in the public land people are going to go all over and make a huge mess and stuff. You can’t ride on public land and the snowmobile trails are usually over hunting properties or cornfields in the summer and the owners don’t like people riding over them (which is pretty understandable) I’m lucky to have land where I can ride my stuff so I can’t complain too much I suppose

Same thing here, you can pretty much go ripping anywhere with a yield sign, just not on 400 series highways or the QEW (Not that I would ever want to do that without first making sure I had a will) (Just when I thought I found a way of not paying the toll on the 407)

Too bad he hasn't popped in to say how he did it to help others who are interested, different areas will have different ways to (hopefully) get it done.

He did it the illegal way just like he said he was going to. He and I went rounds about it in a few FB groups.
Registration is down to 4 things: 1: Does your state have an out right ban on Riding mowers or tractors being used. It seems back in the 80's there was a trend of joyriding tell it was dead and abandoning them. Because of this some states have an out right "Hell No" on the books. 2: Your state is a do what ever your want state or you live in a place with Island laws or Territory laws. For example some states have go at your own risk land laws Alaska being most noted for this. Along with section of Northern Maine. 3: You live in an inspection to register state: Many of these states have a check list that you must comply to under home made vehicle safety or ATV safety requirement. Side note if yours requires brake lights your looking for a pull spring brake switch to add them. 4: You live in a state where anything can be registered. But if you get caught. It is up to you to have everything with in the law required done to your rig when a Officer or a Game Warden stops you. For Example in Maine I can register my Mower but If I run it with no muffler I violate Section 25 of Maine ATV law and its a minimum of $100 fine and Wardens right to impound my machine. 25. ATV noise and fire control devices. The following provisions pertain to ATV muffling and fire control devices and noise level limits.
A. Except as provided in section 13159, a person may not:
(1) Operate an ATV that is not equipped at all times with an effective and suitable muffling device on its engine to effectively deaden or muffle the noise of the exhaust;
(2) Operate or modify an ATV with an exhaust system that has been modified in any manner that will increase the noise emitted above the following emission standard:
(a) Each ATV must meet noise emission standards of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and in no case exceed 96 decibels of sound pressure when measured from a distance of 20 inches using test procedures established by the commissioner; or
(3) Operate an ATV without a working spark arrester.
I'd imagine so same as how every province should also but this discussion is about getting your tractor off road registered so you can plate it and get insurance (if required) for a trail pass
@RCG there's a company I plan to use if the country stays a corporation its called dirtlegal they use your serial or model or both to make a title you get insurance but they give you the tag and registration out of AZ
Dirtlegal.com Hope this helps they can do it for all states because they register in AZ

It's hard to find private land to ride around here too so I just try to be low key when I go out. I haven't even attempted to start any registration process yet just gathered the info!
