Old Craftsman project

Un-named at this time.  Got it for $35.  It's pretty rough, but looks to be a fun project!

I "think" it is a 1974 Craftsman LT10-36

Plans:  

Enter it in the 2018 build-off
Build a machine for the daughter that has more capability
Thinking a speed build at this time, but not too fast for the daughter at this time.  ;-)

Looks like a good start mighty! Something relatively easy to relieve stress working on when you're frustrated with your other build.

More I look at this trans the weirder it gets. H pattern with a clamshell rather than linear split. I'd imagine it had the shift dog setup like foote transmissions or FNRs but I'm not sure, 700Hs had an H pattern with regular shift keys.

I think the differential is in the red circle, I might be wrong though. What's in the yellow circle there though? Is the diff there? Weird little tumor thing there.... Also I see a possibility of the trans breaking at the green line under a load, just a theory though. Don't know how thick it actually is.

Those transaxles do have the shift collar setup, just like the FNR's have. With a shift fork for 1st and reverse, and another for 2nd and 3rd. Not sure if it's more or less reliable than a shift key setup but who knows. Also Rich the yellow part you circled is where the differential assembly is located, quite offset. It's impossible to mix up the axle shafts when you put these back together because one is so much shorter hahaha.

Rich, I totally agree with you on the weak spot. Probably best if I came up with some sort of axle brace or switch to a peerless somewhere down the line. I'm also pretty certain, this is a grease only transaxle too and not one that I can fill with oil.

And i thought mtd transaxles were badly designed ....

Yeah, I am concerned about the same spot Rich pointed out. Looks like a Long and a Short axle converge at that spot. I guess for mowing it works fine, but off-road. I see snap city?! Definate brace in there or re-trans.

With your daughter it oughta work fine depending on how aggressive she is. It would hold up fine for me anyway, but I have an issue with gears and shift keys, not cases

It will probably hold fine for her for now. Opened the oil fill up and it appears to have some ATF in the case? Lots of redish brown oil with a slight hint of Gas odor.

Gas in the tranny? the "ATF" fluid might be from grease that separated out, which is very likely if there is any red lithium grease in it, if its been sitting very long it doesnt do very well.

Ah, . well it could have flooded the cylinder when it was parked and just ran a little into the crankcase. the color ? no idea there but i have worked on some mowers where people have put oil in the gas tank and gas into the engine so ya never know what to expect

That's true. I got a couple good deals because the PO put diesel in a gas engine.

............ Idiots . I do love it when someone gets rid of a good mower because its not running from a carb bowl filled with oil

Looks cool on the inside. Seems like some of the gears ride on the left axle? Never knew the shift dog setup to fail, maybe you could just doc lock it?
