Have you checked if the intake or exhaust valve is stuck open? That could stop it from firing.

I would also check the valves , and recheck the gap as that can greatly affect it,.

I do want to pull the head on it to see if any of the valves are stuck. That very well may be the problem. But when they are stuck it usually looses compression, no? The spark timing is another thing that could be off. I don't really know how you tell how much to turn the points in so if you have a good video on how to do it I would be pleased to watch it.

Yeah I'd definitely bring the gap down to the recommended .020" - .018". If that doesn't work maybe try checking the valve lash, if that is set improperly it could be why it's spitting gas out the intake.

Hell yeah boys. She fired up after I gaped the points, sprayed lots of ether in 'er and turned her over for a few minutes. At first it started up for one second and rolled coal as it spat out the old dust and carbon. Then I sprayed some more ether in it and cranked her over and she fired up. I throttled down and she shut down but that might just be because my hack job key fell out but I don't know what happened first. Now I have to check the transmission fluid and maybe change the filter. I'll then inflate the front tire that's always flat and take it for a test spin. Damn i'm excited. I will post a video some time. Thanks for the help everyone.

Sweet deal! You're gonna love that engine, haha. If it continues to die when you idle it down the idle curcuit is probably just clogged and a good carb cleaning should cure it. Looking forward to seeing the video!

Excellent.... thought it would help with the points gap. Sounded like my Onan did once after I filed mine down. Great job!

Yep. It was way open. Probably at like 30thou. Sometime I might need to buy a whole new points thing because the contacts are quite worn down. Also, yeah. If it continues to shut off, i'll give the carb an extra good cleaning. I should probably get a new air filter too. If I can even find one anywhere hahah. I just need to find where the transmission fluid dipstick is if there is one now.

Good carb cleaning, maybe a filter and don't forget to check that Gas cap vent!  From there, you may have to check the fuel pump if it is not gravity fed.  You were throwing gas vapor before so that is a good sign it's getting gas!

It is a gravity fed model. The fuel cap is a metal one with one of those weird paper type liners. I will check if its not letting air out next time. At least the carb is the one easy thing to get to on this engine.

My cub is gravity fed too, but the tank leaks through a pinhole. Small to fix but annoying . Carb cleaning always helps but you will probably need a new bowl gasket as the old they are the more stretched out and cracked.

Yeah. The gasket sure is old. Not leaking yet though. I don't see any fuel leaks right now.

hmmm depends.  I'd say to the bottom of the threads if it's one like this.

cadet - International Cub Cadet 1650 - Page 3 Img_2114

Or if it's a sight plug in the side of the casting I'd say to the bottom of the threads as well.  I wouldn't fill it up all the way to the fill plug.  That would be expensive and you'd probably have leaks.

Yeah. I dont think that It matters too much but if I see that there is none I will buy some. Next time I change the filter and the fluid I will add what the manual says.

So a few weeks ago I finally got her running, and then she quit right in the middle of the yard. My mom started to get mad and kept telling me to put her away, so I guess that was an excuse to get her moving again. I started by changing the fuel, and although it smelled good and fresh, I have the feeling that someone had put some oil in that gas. I then put the new fuel in her. and jumpstarted it off a truck battery. I then drove it for about 10 minutes as I played around with it and parked it. Man is it ever amazing how much power that thing has, now I know its automatic, but im not used to it and I kept bumping into stuff and spinning the tires out haha. So now I know that it runs, but it shuts off when you throttle down. So i'm assuming the carb is still dirty somehow.

Nice to hear you got to drive 'er around a bit! I imagine it's a pretty fun tractor to drive, haha. Yeah the problem with idling just sorta sounds like a clogged idle jet. Shouldn't be hard to fix, just needs a good cleaning.

Yes I will pull out the screw and clean it. And yes, it does have the hydrotatic controll right up on the dash. Kinda a different setup but it sure is interesting because when you brake, it lodges it back into neutral and then to get going again you have to take your foot off and put her back into drive or reverse.

All I did was get it running in the end. It ran and I drove it, but I didnt really have time to get her back to what it should have been. Plus I dont really like hydrostatics, they are just better for mowing lawns IMO.
