Mighty's Li'l Red 2.0 03271911
OK, starting a new thread for Li'l Red.  I have decided not to take on any other projects at this time other than finishing up Patriot and now Li'l Red 2.0

Original topic: Li'l Red 1.0

The following is a list of improvements etc. to make it more sturdy and hopefully Haspin Ready for 2021.  I don't expect it to take that long, but I will be headed the other direction in the country in 2020.

MUST HAVES!

  1. Front Suspension (yes @AlliskidD21, I said it.  I will probably take some queues from one of your rigs Mighty's Li'l Red 2.0 2240318088)
  2. Some kind of Dash tower bracing, I don't want to bust another gas tank.
  3. I HAVE to get rid of that gas pipe exhaust.  Sounds nice though...  LOL

Like to haves...

  1. New tire package?  At least change out the rear tires.  They suck.
  2. New front bumper of sorts to go with new front end.
  3. Rear bumper?  (Not a requirement at this time.
  4. Separate brakes from clutch.
  5. Matching hubs around the rig.  For easier tire swapping.
  6. Stronger bearings for the front hubs. (Don't need Kal's issue from Haspin)
  7. Battery box is broken.  Maybe a new setup or replace the one I have.

Other things that will be done during refresh...

  1. Frame bracing, redo
  2. Fresh paint, more than just plain Red!
  3. TBD....

Right now Patriot has priority, but I will be tackling this a little along the way.

I’m glad I see frame reinforcement on the list! Now that you’ve been to haspin and seen the terrain, you know what needs to be done to make it through. I have faith in you! Hopefully when you come back to haspin you guys won’t be waiting on me and my slant single to catch up hahaha

Or dragging you up the hill first night out.  LOL

Other things I can think of:

  1. Also need to look into the oil drain leak.  It's getting pretty bad.
  2. Also some new headlights
  3. Maybe some floodlights like Kal.  That came in handy during the night ride.
  4. Better fitment of the hood.  Use the hood's original dash for a template.
  5. Maybe some endo and exo skeleton upgrades...tbd later
  6. A new gas pedal maybe too.

Figured out why it's marking territory as @AllisKidD21 says.  I left the fuel shutoff in the on position and it leaked gas into the block.  That fresh oil change for haspin last month has gotta go.  I really need to get around and look into a carb kit for this thing too.

Carb kit has been sitting on my desk now for a few weeks.  I need to install it sometime.  LOL  I'll finish getting Thor out of the garage and I can move it back in.  I would like to finish up Patriot sometime soon as well.  Fixin to start a rear bumper for Patriot.  See where that goes.

Now for the unpopular post of the day...

I know everyone loves the old hood, but I think I will be going back to the original when I get to working on it more full time.  While the old hood looks cool, it isn't very sturdy on there nor is it functional or easy to work with.  I like the ease of pull a pin and lift off design I had with the original hood.  I will consider another set of those pods to replace the headlights.

Mighty's Li'l Red 2.0 Img_2175

Those fronts look familiar... Oh yeah they are on Patriot!

Yep. I'd definitely put pods on it.

Now this is where I get creative... What if...

What if you cut the circled part out and replaced it with a light bar or something similar? I always thought that might be a cool addition to one of those Murray's.

Maybe even add a scoop Mighty's Li'l Red 2.0 102878487

So this is officially Lil' Red Haspin Edition? Haha.

I'm pretty ready to start tackling this project.  I just need to source some materials for the re-build.

I'm hoping to maybe do something similar to @AllisKidD21's MTD ride in the way of suspension on the front end.  Not sure how I am doing steering just yet, but It looks to be rack and pinion again.  I am not sure yet, but I do like the no play attribute of it.  Red may get extended a wee bit as well in the process.  Maybe a little like Kal.

I hope to get started next month.  Hoping the temps come down a little and hang there for a while.  I've not really experienced the level of humidity we have held onto this year.  More like Louisianan and not Oklahoma.
No

That's kinda neat looking actually, big ol' oppy just sitting there. I'd slap a seat and a steering shaft on it and give 'er hell, hahaha.

It does look neat, but it also goes to show how little the frame is too.  Just a little over 11" wide.

I'm a bit anxious... but I would really like to chop the rear fender pan to lower it about 3" inches.  Then mod the seat bracket to lower the seat another inch or so.  I fear doing any welding on the pan as I feel I will just melt it due to the thinness of the metal.  My welder is not working quite as it should in power or I don't know how to use it properly just yet.  Latter is probably the case.  We'll see how it goes.

Oh yeah, when I put an AYP brush guard on mine, that's when I realized how small it was.

Chop the fenders eh? That'd be pretty hard on a Widebody, but anything's possible...

Don't worry about the welding, I went by the fab shop yesterday and they had welded a cover on the old deck lift cut out and it turned out just fine, not to mention a few other things concerning the body that happened a little earlier. I don't think you'll have much of a problem there. Mighty's Li'l Red 2.0 2731072446

Mighty's using an old Arc welder though, not a wire feed unit. Little more difficult with the thinner steel.

I think i will be able to reuse the front axle.  It is much heavier than I thought it would be.  Few welds here and there will make it pretty sturdy!

Yep, that axle should be fine. You'll definitely need to modify it in some way but I'm sure it'll work out!

Yeah my parents MTD uses the same style but not near as strong or thick of metal as this.  I'm pretty pleased with that.

  • First thing is to give the frame a good bath...
  • Then I am going to weld the seams in the rear up.
  • I might need some materials as I am going to extend the front out a good foot give or take a few inches.

I'll probably do like @AllisKidD21 did on his build-off rat rod and start from the back and work my way forward.
