The title says it all, how is direct drive (drive wheel+friction disk) and I am really questioning how this will hold up in the mud compared to the normal pulley+belt setup.

I got this snapper front engine for $20. Just wondering if it would hold up to anything. Now that I know they are less than desirable, It is a parts mower. cheers Thanks man.

Snapper mowers have advantages and disadvantages - the biggie is the friction drive - they have to be set correctly to work most efficent , they do tend to flatten, crack and wear out with use as well.

Id give it a no for mud/water , since it should be clean for best driveability - you could do a trans swap and ditch the friction drive.
