Yea going Baja theme with a sears is something I really never thought of. I really like it when you put two and two to make something awesome. Really you're the first one I know of to do this and it's coming our great.

Finally got the engine going pretty good, now I can bolt it down. I put a new head gasket on. Watch me jump like a sissy when it backfires!

Air quality in the shop got real bad real quick...

It still has the old oil in it from when I got it. It might be thinned out or might be way too rich. I only ran it for as long as I did in the video. If it turns out to be real bad later i'll put some rings in it. Once I get everything else going, I might take the motor apart and do a little grinding on things. Everything is turning out to be a tight fit. I was going to put the battery between the motor and steering column, but that looks a little tight now. Maybe the battery will go in front of the shock tower, just behind the bumper. Also I was thinking about the gas tank being so low in the back in deep water situations. Once the motor is bolted down I'll be able to see exactly what will fit where.

Old solid mount seat setup
sears - Baja sears suburban - Page 2 Img_2959

Seat brackets from late 80's? simplicity, spring from tomos moped. Old solid front brackets visible in this picture will be cut off.
sears - Baja sears suburban - Page 2 Img_2960

Mostly done here with the lower spring mount and seat bracked finished. Still have to make an upper holder for the spring and a limiting strap to prevent the spring from jumping out on the bumps.
sears - Baja sears suburban - Page 2 Img_2963

New rear engine mounts as seen from the under side of the frame, drilled all the holes for the new motor.
sears - Baja sears suburban - Page 2 Img_2961

As it sits now. I put the steering shaft back in so it would be easier to move around while i'm working on it.

Thanks, it turned out being a little stiffer than I thought it would be. I can always change it later though if I need to. We'll see how it goes after a test ride, it should be better than having it bolted solid!

I more or less have a good idea of what I'm going to do with the clutch. Stock clutch pedal and pulley from the sears and stock clutch from the parts simplicity. A linkage rod will hook them together.

I don't really know how fast It'll go. I have a slightly smaller pulley on the transmission than on the engine. Their pretty close though, almost 1-1. With this transmission you have 3 forward speeds and a high/low range. 6 speeds total. I'm also looking around for a good size brake caliper and rotor, I may have a useable rotor already.

sears - Baja sears suburban - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Baja sears suburban   sears - Baja sears suburban - Page 2 Icon_minitimeDecember 11th 2013, 11:01 pm

Waiting until the weekend to weld up my clutch. Meanwhile I brought home a rear caliper off a lincoln and an unvented rear rotor off of something else of which I can't remember. I wanted to use a rear caliper from a car that had the handbrake separate but haven't found one yet. This one has a lever and associated junk on the back for a handbrake, which makes it slightly bigger and heavier. The other problem is that I don't have quite as much space as I was thinking I had. The caliper probably won't fit in front between the frame and tire and it might be too far away from the rotor even if I put it in the back. In other words, I might not be able to get it close enough to the center line of the axle.
sears - Baja sears suburban - Page 2 Img_2965

I was going to take the hub off and do some checking, but it happened to be froze after being on there for the past 40 or so years. I didn't get it off as of yet, but I soaked it up with some oil and left it sit. I didn't break anything yet, maybe just scaring up a couple of the wheel bolts using a puller.
sears - Baja sears suburban - Page 2 Img_2966

You can't ask for a better fit for the bolt pattern. I can't just bolt it on between the hub and rim like on a car though because the rotor is too close to the tire for the caliper to fit. I was thinking about bolting it inside the hub, possibly using some longer bolts and spacers.  Motorcycle brakes would be nice. I might be able to figure out something else to use or find some different parts that fit better. I'm not really in a big hurry on the brakes just yet, so it's not too big of a deal.

I have thought about motorcycle brakes, but the few bikes I've looked at, shared a master cyl with the rotor in the other side of the wheel.

You mean like 2 sets of brakes on the front wheel? You could just use one if you wanted too. Mostly the japanese bikes (race type motorcycles or whatever you call them) are like that with two calipers and rotors up front.
