pulley size ideas? I don't want a 1:1 ratio. I want a bigger pulley in the front and a smaller in the back. what are your ideas on size?

How fast are you lookin to go? I got two tractors that have a 7inch in the front and a 4inch in the rear. They both do 60KPH.

I wanna do about 40-45 in 5th (5 speed peerless) but I want to be able to put it in a lower gear and go mudding. It will probably be road ridden periodically

Ahh I see. The tractors I have set up to go fast have a pretty reasonable slow first gear. Probably equivalent to a regular 3rd gear. One of them I use for a show type tractor just because it has a classic look. Its a 79. The other is a beater I use for rompin its from 83. It eats through the mud. I only usually throw it in 3rd in mud holes but my buddy has done stunts in 4th going full speed into mud holes. It has 5 gears.

Assuming your talking in KPH id go with a stock tranny pulley and a 6 or 7 inch engine pulley. Also a Kevlar belt will eliminate problems. Its good to throw an extra spring on the belt tensioning arm too.

There's programs and formulas to convert tranny gear ratio to engine RPM to tire size out there but figuring it out is complicated.

ohhh ok. The reason I had a 7 inch pulley on my engine was because I couldn't fit any bigger. If you can fit bigger then go ahead! I didn't want to go much smaller then a 4 inch on the tranny to avoid slippage. Maybe a 3.5 would do but that's pushin it. If your really lookin into going faster still, you could run the biggest you can off your engine to a jack shaft and the jack shaft to the tranny.

The ratios you would really have to figure out but Id do a 4 inch on the engine side of the jack shaft and the tranny side id to a 5 inch, then the tranny id put a 4 inch.

So really your just increasing the overall ratio by an extra inch. Only now you need two belts, two pillow block bearings depending on how you design it, and all the extra money. Would make a killer machine though! It's just cutting it close to how quick first gear is going to put you :/

Thx. I was thinking about what to do about the steering. I'm thinking about just putting washers next to the gears because the gears slip as it is. Plus it will stiffen the steering too

I think I'll be ok with a steering stabilizer. Thinkin about rigin up a brake on the pulley itself

unless the brake is attached to the TRANNY pulley, your braking will be limited by belt friction. I.E a brake on the jackshaft pulley locks up, the tires make the belt slip, tires keep moving.

If I did a brake that way, its would be on the tranny pulley. No other way to do it besides the stock one on the side (won't do jack at 45mph. The tires hug the tranny too much to put a caliper and rotor on it

The big issue with this idea is in the event you accidentally bump the tranny into neutral, or between gears, you will have zero braking.

you can bolt a kart rotor to the stock transaxle rotor and mount a mechanical caliper on the frame. Simple

......or you could fab up a set of friction brakes that rub against the tires, real simple and effective
