so my mtd trans was having problems so i took it out and opend it presurwashed it and while it was open my dad walked by and said well while it out we mays well lock it so we did im sorry if i copyed somones idea but i dont see it anywhere so this is how i did it

this works on any mtd with a vary drive so there should be to bolts or nut things which are the spider gears clean those as hard as youy can

then weld them as good as posible and grind them smoth but mak shur the top and bottem bolts are welded

do it just like i did it here

now you can take your tires off for this but mine are rusted on so

and when you put it back together dont I MEAN DONT PUT THE SHIFTER BALL BACK IN because it will not shift back and forth if you do. hope this can help some people

I don't really mess with these so I'm not very familiar with them. Can you outline the issue with the shift detent ball a little better?

no it wasnt cast aluminum and about the shiftball if you have ever otten a mtd on a steep hill going up or down it wont shift F N R becuase of to much force so a locked axle is like force on the transaxle and it wont shift on flat or steep land so if you take the shift ball out it will release alot of force and it will shift dont know why it dose that

please dont do this locking design becuase i went into the mud, put it in the 7 speed mark let out the cluch and broke the welds but it dose work but not under force

im 99/9% sure that case isnt steel (aluminum). hense why your welds cracked off so easy....

Ditto what he said, id take that carrier apart and weld two spider gears fozzy lock. probably would lock it pretty good.

i know that you haft to weld the speder gears but if you have ever taken a mtd trany apart you can barly even see the spider gears and you haft to drill 4 pop rivit out just to get to them

ive took a few apart for ***** and giggles, and i didn't have to drill out rivets to get to the spider gears,...

hmmm wonder in the zinc locker would have worked better or not on these take them bolts out and fill it up!!!
