So if everything goes to plan to morrow I should have the engine running. I'll also get some decent pics of it Wink

You need something to hold the bowl on. That is the part missing. Maybe after getting that jet out and a cleaning, plug the bottom hole on the bowl and use some wire to hold the bowl on so you can take it off to do maintenance later.

Well I can't use it because one float pin bracket is broken. I'm using a 8hp carb in stead. I'm cleaning it at the minute but I'll get some pics soon. Btw, does anyone know how to remove the throttle butterfly shaft on these carbs because the seals are worn out on this carb and the shaft is a little bent

Thought this is interesting. Found it buried in one of my fields yesterday.

project - Go Kart Project - Page 2 Img_2133

It's an axle with two drum brakes and an open diff. Trying to dig it out.

project - Go Kart Project - Page 2 Img_2134
project - Go Kart Project - Page 2 Img_2135
project - Go Kart Project - Page 2 Img_2132

I don't know what it's from or how long it's been there. There's a disused narrow gauge railway behind the fence where it is that closed in the 30s so at first I wondered if it was an axle from a wagon or something but it wouldn't have a differential. It's probably something someone has left there and over time it has been buried in the soil.

That is quite the interesting find! Appears to be in decent shape for who knows how long it has been buried.

I *believe* the pin just pushes out of the little plastic stopper on the end. The little piece with the screw that adjusts how far a butterfly can open.

Yeah, doesn't seem to be too badly corroded.

Thanks. I'll try that.

Got half of the carb cleaned up. I'm soaking it in kerosene and then wire bushing it with a bench grinder. Going to bring it back the aluminium.

Carb is almost finished. Haven't got all the paint off though.

The shifter on the transmission was really stiff and wouldn't go into 3rd gear. No wonder...

project - Go Kart Project - Page 2 Img_2137

...Full of water. The shifter is rusted so I put some oil on it to get it working smoothly again.

Better check all your gear teeth. The Foote we were gonna use in the Dynamark looked about like that and the gear teeth that were submerged weren't salvageable. Give those a look before putting any more work into that trans

Yep! Pretty nasty.

Work on this has stopped this past week, I've been pretty busy with other things. The next thing to do once the gearbox is back together is replacing the rear wheels. I am going to use rear lawn tractor rims and tyres for this but I'm wondering whether or not they will handle high speed corners etc?

@CQ, I did have a look at the carb and the pin the the end piece doesn't push out. Do I not need to get into the piece on the inside of the carb to undo a screw or something?

Ohh yeah....I remember now. The end of the carb should pop off and you can get a screwdriver in there to unscrew the butterfly

So I bought a Chinese comet torque converter clone for another project and discovered that it wouldn't fit. I think I'm gonna buy a honda gx200 clone and use that on this go kart. The Foote and 12hp Briggs will go on the Westwood S1200 with full suspension. Just gotta fab a mounting plate for the clone and put a sprocket in the middle of the axle.

Torque Converter;

I did get the 1 inch axle machined down to 3/4" to fit mower tyres on the back but the bore on one of the wheels must have been a bit rusty and when I put in on it got stuck on the axle and now won't move up or down. Even with a flywheel puller.

Here's the axle and stuck wheel. I got the other wheel on fine but this one is stuck. I put some grease and penetrating oil round it but did not help. I'm not too sure what to try next.

I'd try the wax idea. It has worked for me in the past. Maybe there was some burrs from the machining that wedged themselves in there? That would suck. If you do get it off, make sure to clean everything good with some sandpaper!

Best thing to do since it is out of the go cart, use that vise in the background to hold the axle, probably will be on an angle which is ok. And nail the axle through with a center punch. The vise will keep the bearing and rim from moving and you can put alot of force on the axle without tearing anything up with the center punch pushing the axle out of the rim.

Thanks, I'll try the heat and wax this week.
Prancstaman, I will try that but I doubt it will move when the puller can't move it.

Stuck wheels, clutches, pulleys hubs and whatnot... man they suck. I havnt had luck with the wax, but repeated heating and cooling has dome well for me.
