[DNF][2020 Build-Off Entry] mrshaft696's The Grey Boy Sears puller

Well I am gonna do my best here... this is a late 70's sears suburban, 6speed hi low trans, 16hp briggs opposed twin.  I bought it from a family that the old man died, it was pretty well taken care of... I have allot of old records and manuals for it, the family called it the grey boy, I also bought two other suburbans that were the blue boy and yellow boy...

Goals are to build it to pull in the stock tractor class this summer hopefully, I have to abide by the rules of the place I intend to pull so certain modifications are allowed and others are not...

In the short term it has had a nasty backfire thru the exhaust while running, I got the heads off it tonight, and the most important thing I think I noticed is that the intake manifold gasket was loose and missing on the passenger side, and that is the side the backfire was happening so I think I have it figured out... Either way I have both heads pulled to clean the carbon off the pistons and valves....

Gonna paint it up, get some Ag tires on the back, get a pulling hitch and some weight..

The patina is perfect.

got both heads off and the intake manifold off.... cleaned off the carbon and checked the valve clearances... everything looks good except the passenger side intake manifold was totally missing and the screws were loose so, I am waiting for those parts to come in and i can put the motor back in... I had to unbolt the motor and turn it 90 deg so i could work on it....

so I finally got the motor cleaned up new gaskets, retuned the carb & I finally drove it without something crazy going on.... This thing is awesome, it does a big wheelie and pulls hard in 3rd gear....

not much progress but got the gas tank out and the seat off, want to get a smaller pan type seat to use for pulling.... plans are to make a front weight bracket, front weights, and go ag tires in the rear. Started wet sanding the hood, gotta get some paint soon....

The backfire problem was due to a bad intake gasket, now it runs great and strong... will do a big wheelie in 3rd gear....

So weights are expensive etc, I found a deal on some sets of these ones for riding mower rear wheels, I cut a chunk off of them with the sawzall and mounted them up to my front rims & it worked out great. Luckily my valve stem is on the inside....

I am working on a bracket for weights way out front & getting ready to do some paint...

been a tough few months with the virus nonsense, all the local pulls got cancelled, & we are a month away from a new baby! Anyway got some work done... got my fenders painted and scored some 23x10.5 tires....

tractor is moving on its own... got the tires mounted.. i got some rear wheel weights over the weekend... still have to paint my hood... not sure how much further i will get with the baby coming at the end of august but im working on it...

Sorry for my absence, I dont really need the big highlighted reminder, but anyway my son was born on the 25th, and things have been crazy obviously....we are back home and I did end up buying and selling allot of tractors between march and now even with the stupid virus problems...

I just starter work back on this tractor but I probably wont have it ready for competition till next season, but I will have it looking good soon...
