I haven't given up on this old piece of junk! Well, not the engine anyway. The Craftsman is going to JB when he has a chance to come get it. I need some parts engines, or one that could use parts off this engine. Don't care about size, or whether it is horizontal or vertical. Will absolutely take a pressure lube. I need help with this, as these engines are extinct in my area. Even guys that have been working on mowers for 30+ years have never heard of them. Old mowers are virtually nonexistent around here. Let me know what you have and if you can ship it, as I can't drive any distance. Thanks guys!

They're not all the same, I don't know the full compatibility of them but I do know there's 2 generations of them. Do you mind posting the number on the fan shroud to help narrow it down or the model number of the tractor if you know? If you're not sure on either the picture below might help, I was fortunate enough to find a Oppy repair manual a couple years ago so I can help you with whatever info you need.
I'm pretty sure the smaller displacement (12 and 14hp) vs bigger displacement (16 and 18hp+) had different strokes. The 1st gens are definitely not easy to come by anymore but the 2nd gen "turbo cool" Oppys came in ALOT of AYP built tractors, LTs and GTs from the mid 90s to mid 2000s. We just got buried in 3 feet of snow so I won't be able to find much at the salvage yard right now but there was an old Gilson with a stripped Oppy last time I checked and he'd probably let me buy just the crank, he gives me good deals but shipping might be steep though.
I think there are 3 series. At least what I have seen. Externals are pretty interchangeable. not so much rods, cranks... 40 series, 42 series, and I think 46 series. Like @Brianator said, if you want parts interchangeable to what you have, we will need to figure out what series the engine is. I know rods and cranks are not interchangeable unless you keep them paired up. Like in the engine I dealt with last fall when my 18HP opposed rod failed and all I had was 16hp parts engines. Also, vertical cranks are longer than horizontal. Little details here and there.
I'll take whatever I can get. I'll mainly be using the tin and coil/carb off this one. Heads too. I have that manual also, and forgot about the differences. Bleh.
What would be ideal is a good short block that I can put my tin on. Buying the parts piecemeal gets pricey fast.
Also the engine is a 422437 or 422477 (I think).

Can you post a pic of the tag so we can see the rest of the info? I checked the book and the bore is the same between the 40 and 42 so the main difference is in the crank and rods. My book is circa 1992 and it has no info on 46s if they exist, I haven't heard of them until @MightyRaze mentioned it. If these are like the single cylinder flatheads then the heads will have different size combustion chambers with the 40 being slightly smaller, there should be a 42 stamp on yours I'll assume on the underside of the fins. You'd think more compression would be good but it's a negligible difference on flatheads, they want flow more than they want compression to boost power. The 42 camshaft also probably has more lift on the intake side too, just things for you to think of of you want more power.
I just saw a complete 2nd gen parts engine on the local buy and sell for $125, too bad you're so far away... it lost a flywheel magnet which also took out the starter apparently.
Cool so a first gen horizontal shaft, check! I Imagine it's a 18hp, my 16hp is a 40 which is interesting. I found a picture of that Gilson I was talking about, it's a vertical shaft unfortunately but he may have others. The horizontal shaft engines have ball bearings on the crank wheras the vertical has plain "bearings"

Yes, it is an 18hp. And it does have a ball bearing, but only on the pto end. Other end is plain. I'm starting to like vertical shaft engines better.

LOL crazy enough, I actually have a non-ball bearing PTO side cover (points engine) I got off @RichieRichOverdrive. It got me though until I could fix my ball bearing one. So many variants of these engines when you actually dive in!

Still haven't found one within range yet. Main thing I really need is a crank and flywheel. And rods. People are insane on what they think they are worth on ebay.

I hear that! Before 3-4 years ago, I could find just about any single or twin engine briggs for 25-30$ except vanguard. They ran in the 100's which is still good. Today, same engines are 250-500 and the vanguards are 800+ in my area. Needless to say, when I seen a tractor with both a pressure lube 20hp opposed (that ran) and an 820 trans for $80, I didn't hesitate no matter how bad it looked.

Heck, I'd give you twice that plus shipping for just the motor.

Yea at that price i would go straight for the vanguard. Are they not they pressure lube as well? Every V-Twin I have seen is. Plus they sounds pretty cool even with a stock muffler lol

Think I'm going to end up parting this thing out. I didn't really realize how much of a mistake I made destroying the crank and flywheel. There was nothing wrong with them, and the engine only needed rods and a thrust washer. Now that I see how much it would cost to revive this thing....it simply isn't worth it. If anyone needs anything, now is the time to let me know.
I'm really disappointed over this. I had a lot in this thing, and 10 seconds of uncontrolled anger made me lose it.

Found this but don't want to pay that much for it. Also found a 16hp Vanny for $200 less.
I don't blame you, can find a whole tractor for less than that! That's a 2nd gen btw, you can tell because of the way it is! Lol. (The riveted tag). Finding old unwanted tractors for cheap is the best way to score engines in my experiences, I saw a 1980 Craftsman GT18 with a oppy sitting on someone's front yard for weeks, I talked to the guy and scored it for $100 with the cutting deck, snowblower, wheel weights and tire chains. My Noma grass cutter I scored for $60 and it has a 14hp Vanguard vtwin. My parts Noma I scored for $100 because it had a broken axle, only has a 12hp Briggs but it's an I/C and the tractor came with a good deck and a bagger. Be patient and keep your feelers out... if you search them they will come! Lol
But why not just hang onto it? You may come across a cheap parts engine in the future to revive it, I still say it's possible to repair and run it. I'd definitely give it a try if it was me. You seem to like the oppys (good choice) so might as well keep it, worse case Ontario it's parts for another!
@Ifitaintbroke I have a locked up 19hp b&s if you want any parts to fix your's
I appreciate it. I'll keep it in mind. I saw what appeared to an oppy in of all things a Poulan yesterday, just down the road from me. Might scope it out.
