@RichieRichOverdrive
Those are some good points. Thanks! That's why I started this thread!
I agree with them not taking to mud that well as it can gum up the Driven pulley as the chain will just bring the mud right into it. So for that application I would not try that. That part would not bother me. I rarely get that deep in mud since I hate to be muddy. I get muddy enough at work lol!
You would either need to have lots of rpm or a crazy sprocket ratio to hit a lot of speed. Put if you were to do crazy sprocket ratio you don't have to work about you belt not have enough surface area to not slip anymore though!

@Brianator I have actually mentioned many times to friends that if the engine in my Polaris dies I would just drop a 212 or something into it as it would be just as useable!
And good tip on full engagement! Thanks!
Another reason why I thought I wouldn't be that bad as like you said CVT's are used in most modern off road equipment now adays so they must have a work around for everything or something. I know Polaris pioneered it and not to many people where a fan but its the new standard now!

They're all adapted from snowmobiles really, I think it has a good chance of working in a tractor and was considering taking the setup out of the quad and putting it in the old MTD Eight Hundred, I scored a good running and clean Chinesium 225cc ATV engine this past summer as part of a $100 package deal so now I can have a proper engine in the quad. The GX made it live and rideable but now it's time to upgrade!

That great @Brianator I can't wait to see it! Are you think of using a the original clutch or pulley system? I am not sure what the MTD would have had from the factory.
I think with some tinkering it would work fine for my applications which is not hardcore crazy riding. Just light trails and utility work!

This specific old MTD (1972) has a horizontal engine and trans input, the clutch is a belt idler system located just behind the motor so it would have to go and I'd have to fab my own somewhere under the tractor to work with a CVT. I'm still not sure if I'll go that route or not but it crossed my mind as I was brainstorming a few months ago. I don't want to keep the tractor and I also don't want to scrap it (bought ot for the cutting deck and engine) so I was thinking of building it as an offroader with what I (mostly) already have then selling it without an engine, that's why I want to build it around my GX200, then anyone can find and drop an engine in it and ride!
