Street mower

It started off as a old murray with a 3speed axle and a 8hp teccy.
It now has a 6speed locked peerless and a 14hp kohler command.
Pretty much all the mechanical work is done and she does 20mph easy probably closer to 30, it's got 16x6-8 tires in the rear and just regular stock craftman wheel and tires in the front.
It's currently in bear metal but this pic was taking today rite before i started sanding.\
I still need to make a cool custom hood though.

id lower it- being an old murray pan style - itd act just like 94 did - totally out of control . That chassis is just like my agway - my murray was a shift on the fly - that thing was fast- TOO fast and didnt even have it wide open or high gear either.

When i get around to my murray again, its getting a chop in height, and im changing the steering, oh and adding brakes.

Hard to tell with the pics but it's pretty darn low the way she is, i will lock the front axle though for more grip!
The steering is 100% tight!

My steering was tight at slow speeds - when i got out and opened it up - it was a whole nother story- i just never felt like mine was safe - seemed to wobbly, even with the bigger wheels. The lower the tractor is- the better itll handle- not so tipsy- my MTD feels like a racing go kart compared to the murray.

I got the body all painted, just have to do the wheels and make a hood and paint it.

Looks sharp- i like the red/black with the pinstripe - id get some chrome paint for the wheels- set it off nice.

Yeah i was going back and forth between the chrome wheels or black, i just think black would be to plan looking.

Nice paint scheme !! I like !!! BTW, you guys are just scared of speed lol. I've driven the most stable and unstable machines up to ~40 MPH down the road plenty hehehe. Had a few hard spills and road rash in my time tho.

Yeah i learned my lession on my old craftsman that had like half a turn of play in the steering when i was going 30mph and hit a pot hole!

Yeah i want to 'borrow' Ford boi's paint scheme on the wheels of his racer- the black deep part of a rim with the chrome ring around it ( all with paint) - i think thatd look cool on my stocker task force, which id been debating about painting them .

Naw, not scared of speed, should see my wife drive like speed racer- LOL! Actually it was sort of a rush flying down the street ( back streets- not main streets) where i used to live and at the father in laws . Id be lying if i said i wasnt scared on my earlier tractors tho - its a learning curve - each tractor gets better, more 'safe' - my craftsman ( 1st one) felt pretty stable - i think that ran around 25-30mph - just had no brakes, the murray i figured would be more stable with the wider wheels- but with the seating position - it was way too top heavy and tipsy, not to mention the 'loosening steering' and the 'no brakes thing' again- i really wanted to open that up , but was seriously scared to on the way it handled ( darn near crashed it when pop took that video of me- that wasnt even wide open, 6th gear either) - just kept darting side to side- now the MTD feels pretty darn good actually- its ride hieght is about 2" lower then stock, fixed front axle ( murrays wasnt) , lower profile rear wheels and lower seating position- i keep joking that it feels like the 'big wheel' trike i had when i was a kid - but i need to open the speed potential of it now, 10mph aint cutting it . Since my nephew is trying to mod his yazoo RER into a go kart, im really wanting to get my agway and wizard done to go riding over at his place( has woods and stuff near his house).

How come good brakes are always the hard part??
I thought your MTD went faster then 10mph, it should handle 20 with no problem by the looks of it.
I really need to get my speed on GPS, already want this one to go faster!

TRcustoms: That was my stock 97 mastercut that by some miricle seemed to haul arse, in the backyard at least - my 91 also seemed to haul pretty good in the backyard - once i hit the street, i think i could almost walk faster then it ran . I was pretty dissapointed in its performance- even with the smaller pulley ( while it lasted) it wasnt all that fast.

Yeah brakes are always expensive - stockers might grip once then thats it. I probably have over $100 in 2 sets of brakes - one drum set and one disc set ( disc is going on the WH) - drums are for the wizard. Id still like to go hunt around the local junkyard for a set of hydraulic brakes.

With a 4" rear and a 5" front you'll probably be around 30mph, thats a nice speed!

Its a 3 speed like your murray - i just wanted to get to the swamp at my folks a tad faster then it did stock ( was SLOW, could walk faster) , then had those few issues and never had a chance to drive it ( keyway pin snapped, got poison ivy, then was time to fly home).

Might start disasembly of my wizard ...post poning stock projects again.....heck with it, mowing season is over- time for some hot rods.

The mod MTD steers awsome - thats all locked down. I tore apart the wizard tuesday - need to raise the front axle and lock it , then can get my rear axle bering set- im aiming for 4" ride height with that thing. Im going to use some 6" regular tractor tires on it - the new rims are wide enuff. Ill make a build thread when i get back to it.

haha, same body as my sears badged craftsman rm 4 stroke tractor (made by murray chassis)

Update!

I got the electrical fixed! YAYA no more jump starting!

I also added a 2nd clutch spring and adjusted the clutch to grap harder, and man does she ever take off great.

I can do long posi sideways burnouts all day with her, i also did a 6th gear wheelie about 5 or so feet long, kinda scared the crap outta me for a bit cause i didn't really mean to do it but i just went along with it.

Sounds like my nephew- he was pulling wheelies on his lil yazoo RER- well before he took it apart anyway. I actually dont like to do wheelies - not as young as i used to be, cant bounce back as easy if i crash.

Yeah i hear ya, i have a bad back from crashing dirt bikes and stuff years ago and i can't take much of that either.

Today i also got a kill switch hooked up too, over some time i'll have the stuff to make a good brake system.

I got a kill switch and everything now.
I still need to figure out some brakes.
Funny thing is i'm calling this a street mower but i never use it on the street, more like a yard mower!

I seen a tether kill switch on e-bay i might buy, i like the idea of if you fall off it shuts off.

I'm already wanting it to go faster.

Id head to a motorcycle repair shop or local junkyard - see what you can come up with- some day ill get over to the scrap yard n find a disc setup- ill need it for the wheelhorse, i dont think that disc from northerntools would hold up well ( ill be abusing the hell out of that tractor when its done).

I still need to do the motor swap on the mod MTD - thats just sitting under a tarp- maybe once i get the wizard on 4 wheels ill start messing with it again- i want that sucker to haul arse.

Yeah, i do have a local motorcycle junk yard.
This mower does maybe 20 but in the yard it's fine but once i get on the road it's like i'm standing still.
I would like more around 30-35mph.

Thats exactally how my MTD felt - seemed super fast in the backyard, then was like slow going wot. The murray was never like that- was fast in both places.

I think that 6 speed trans from the murray might find its way into the MTD soon enough....
