Battery recharge Empty
PostSubject: Battery recharge   Battery recharge Icon_minitimeOctober 5th 2013, 6:11 pm

Hey, I wire my tractors with fearlesses diagram. Works great, but on my new tractor I used the old key switch and hooked up only the three wires needed for turning over the engine. Then I added a momentary kill switch. So I need to recharge the battery right? The magneto wire coming from under the flywheel sparks when I hook it to the battery side of the solenoid (usually works to back feed and charge the battery) and I'm just wondering if it is a short under the flywheel.. I don't want to go through the hassle of removing a stuck flywheel if I don't have to. There's also a black wire coming from  under the flywheel to, because this mower had lights. The only thing I can think of that is making it spark when I try to hook it up to charge the battery is that it is touching ground under the flywheel (a short) and just wanted some of your opinions. Thanks!!

I had that issue before and mine was a bad stator it fried itself and actually took my battery with it while I was out riding one day. Does your charging circuit have a little diode on it?

No... I usually just run a straight wire from the red wire coming out from under the flywheel to the battery side of the solenoid and it works great. So maybe this stator is bad?

There's supposed to be a little diode in it. Usually one factory before the first connector. Otherwise you are sending around 14v AC to the battery. Which isn't good and probably wont charge the battery.

Please provide me with the Model Type Code of your engine (assuming Briggs) and pictures of whatever wires and connectors come out of the engine. We'll get your charging system sorted out,

Please TYPE the code information- I can't make it out from the picture.

As for the wiring, that's not very clear either, so let's try for a verbal description. What colours are the two wires coming out with the blue crimp connectors? What colours are any other wires that come out of the engine?

I mainly want to focus on the two wires with the crimps right now. I suspect the factory connector's been cut off, and whoever cut it off didn't happen to notice the diode that was probably there, and now likely isn't.

Black and red? 2 wires. 1 charge and 1 for lights? Looks like he cut out the diode that converts ac to dc off of the charging circuit

Yea. It has two wires coming from the engine and one is red and one is black, it was a motor I found for free... Not on a chassis and the two wires were just hanging out and the connectors were from me trying to hook them up temporarily till I got it workin so I didn't waste souder lol but if it was suppose to have a diode to covert the current can I get another one ?

I agree with CrazyKid. I believe you've got the dual-circuit alternator with one AC lighting circuit and one DC charge circuit. I'm gonna do some digging, I believe I can get you a part number, but I still need your Model Type Code...

And crazykid wouldn't have known there was a diode in the circuit lol that's most likely my whole issue

Are you sure the last number on that model number is a "1"? I would think it would be a "7". Odd. At any rate, it's a 28CID model, generally rated 15hp. Don't be fooled by stickers and marketing.

Your engine is a 1996 model year, plain bearing, splash lube. Common as mud. Briggs doesn't list a part number for JUST the diode, but as an assembly consisting of the connector, several inches of wire, and the diode already installed. Your part number for this replacement harness is 691237.

When you get it, wiring colours SHOULD match up. To be sure and be safe, make sure the new wire with the diode gets connected to the red wire off the engine. this is the CD charge circuit. The black wire is the AC lighting circuit and gets connected only to your lights. Do NOT tie it into your 12v DC system.

Yup it's a 1 and yea 96 sounds right and sweet 15hp lol but I'm wondering if I could just buy a diode at the store? It converts DC to AC or AC to DC.

That's totally weird. If you have electric start, it should be a 7 or even an A. Odd.

If you go tripping through the wrecking yard with a pair of wirecutters, just make sure you get one with the same colour wires (red and black) and the plastic connector will be white.

Sure enough, you can just wire in a diode once we can establish what the correct rating of the diode would be, and since a diode is an electric one-way valve, you have to install it the right way around, too. Finding a replacement harness would take all the guesswork out. IF I can establish the diode rating, I'll let you know.

No progress on either MULE or MULEII lately. Been pretty busy with other things, and it seems that when I DO have time, it's raining... Like right now... Dangit.

I had the booger diode issue. I bought a similar diode from radioshack. It was a 3amp rectifier for up to 300v. I researched the original before I bought it and came up with that diode the original for my mower was 3amp up to 600v. Same style liquid silicon style diode

I actually connected the red and black than placed the diode after them. always make sure the silver end faces away from the alternator/stator or you will never charge a battery
