PostSubject: BUILDING THE MOWER - DAYS OF THUNDER RACE MOWER    Thu Feb 25, 2016 8:34 pm

OK so i have been a bit slow getting started on my Super-B build off mower and i did mention on the Super-B thread why that was - i hate starting a new job before finishing the last!

So late last year we built a race mower from scratch in 2 weeks for a new race series that was starting in NI, the mower was done just in time and performed well at the races.  But obviously we knew that it was going to need torn apart and rebuilt properly to achieve its full potential - so in November thats what we started.

As of this afternoon it is pretty much done, there will be some testing to do before the new season but otherwise I'm free to get started on the build off tractor now Smile

obviously, if you do a days of thunder tractor though, you need to start the process by giving the chassis a pep talk...

Really came out nice. Where'd you get the numbers from?
I liked that movie back in the day....even if a lot of the racing parts were super fake.

Oh nice. Came out good for painting them on. Could put the city emblem on there too. Maybe some sponsor stickers off ebay.

I didn't even notice your video spoof at first. lol, neat!

Back when nascar still used the templates, before the final remnant of "stock" was removed from stock car racing. Now all that's left is some stickers.

Well she took 2 weeks to get into the basic running shape of a race mower, which we raced and won with - but after the racing was done for the year it got completely pulled apart and reworked a lot to get it where it is now, we took what we had learned from the seat time and improved all the weak spots, it lifts the front wheels on hard takeoffs now and steers very directly - a wee animal!

Tomorrow i start on the engine for the super-b, I'm pretty excited lol

Its got a go kart axle and a 90 degree drive - no gearbox or transaxle - its always in gear and only has the 1 gear ratio! thats the way a lot of the uk race mowers are done, it works out well, less to get broken, but maybe not so useful for general tasks lol

Its got a twist clutch now, the original tractor only had a single pulley deal, we robbed a double pulley clutch from an old murray mower deck i think it was, then when i did the rebuild i built a clutch from scratch from thick metal so it didn't flex. I like a manual clutch because you can use it to initiate drifts when the course is slippy and the front is understeering Wink the engine is the weak point in the driveline now :/ (the engine has to stay fairly stock - the exceptions being exhaust and de-governing it, theres a couple of rundowns/vids on my youtube of what we did
