There are atv, tractor, truck mounted setups and trailer setups.
How much water do you plan to haul?
Water is 10 pounds a gallon roughly, and your tires and axles will need to be able to carry it.
Also, a lot of the factory units and some of the truck mounted ones I've seen, use a flip down boom to widen the soak area. and also some have a hose attachment for spot watering.
When I build mine I plan to use a plastic 55 gallon drum. So mine will have to hold about 550 pounds. I plan to mount it on a trailer to tow behind my lawn tractor. I want to use the same method to spray the water but put the pipe on the back and the sides to cover a larger area. I also want a hand held sprayer to water the taller plants I cant drive over. I plan on using a little 2 stroke water pump from northern tool to fill the tank and to spray the water. I probably wont build mine till spring because I have no use for it now.

My dad built a spraying arm off the side of his snapper for putting grass killer on fence rows it was the windshield washer setup of a ford explorer wired to a swith worked great only problem was it didnt have a big enough resivor but you could adapt the pump to something bigger.

The initial setup will work good for the deicer , but probably won't be effective for making mud. You would need a valve in the center, when closed the water flows out the holes in your pipe, when open it would dump out the valve like a faucet. The valve I would use would be 1 1/2 inch or so for more water. The pipe with holes will make mud, but how many passes would it take to get enough water down? The open valve would get more water down faster.
