PostSubject: Hydro or Not? 10 hour Question. Need an answer ASAP!!!!!    hydro - Hydro or Not? 10 hour Question. Need an answer ASAP!!!!! Icon_minitimeMarch 13th 2015, 4:48 pm

Hey guys, finally a mower has come up for sale (cheap ones are rare in NZ Sad ) but I can't tell if its got a hydrostatic tranny or a normal belt drive one. I've asked the seller and he doesn't know. He has asked me 'what's the easiest way to tell.' Seeing as I'm still a Newbie, I don't know how to put what's in my head into words! He doesn't want anyone veiwing it, so I'm kinda stuck!

So could someone tell me any of these things? It would be greatly appreciated!

1. Can you answer his question for me?
2. Can any of you tell fron the photo (below) if it's a hydro or not?
3. Does anyone know what brand or model it is, cause then I can Google it!

Thanks soooo much.
BTW: The auction closes in 10 hours so please hurry!!!!!!

looks like a hydro if it has a gear selector its a gear if it has the variable speed lever on the side where you can just push it and pull it then it is hydro. looks kinda like a snapper or something dunno.

Thanks Moose. I'm seeing as gear shifter on the near side of the photo so is it probably a belt drive?
Thanks

I'd say that isn't a Hydro, judging by the gear lever with I think says "1,2,3,4,5" on it which means its a 5 speed transmission, not a Hydrostatic. The brand/model is probably a Murray or YardKing 12/30, meaning 12hp and a 30" deck.

EDIT:
Looking at the picture again, it might be a hydro because of the foot pedal.

Thanks for that Very Happy
I asked him a question and didn't reply the question( Wink ) but he did say it has 5 forwards and one reverse gear. So I assume that it would be belt drive. The lever by the sterring wheel would probably be a hand throttle?
Thinking I might try buy it, but anymore info would be appreciated. Thanks

I don't reckon it's a Yard King cause their mowers are 30/12s not 12/30s

Thinking at may be a 'Castel Garden', as there were a couple on Trade Me a few months back that looked similar and said 12/30

A hydro is belt drive. The difference between a hydro and a normal transmission is that the hydro has a pedal (or lever) that you push/pull back and forward for forward and reverse. A normal (manual) transmission has a lever which you push or pull to put it in a higher gear or a lower gear. If he said it has 5 forward gears and one reverse gear then it is NOT a Hydrostatic transmission.

Yeah, or a Hayter. Or a Snapper as mentioned.

That pedal on the right side is the clutch/brake pedal. The big lever on the dash next to the steering wheel is most likely the mower deck engage. The mower deck probably had the "lift" mechanism built into it. Might just me but don't the rear fenders, running boards, and the clutch pedal look like Fearlessfront's grass cutter?

The difference between a manual and hydrostatic transaxle: a hydro drives like an automatic drive car almost, the farther you push the pedal/ lever in, the faster it goes. While a manual transaxle you drive like a 5-speed car. You drive it with a clutch and a shifter.

My best guess is a manual trans-axle.

It is a manual transaxle, and it is built by murray. I have a mower with the same frame. It is a good buy.

if it has gears then when you shift it will click and if its a hydro when you shift it will be smooth with no clicks
