Yeah, $700+ seems like waaaay to much to spend just so you can say you have a diesel tractor.

#We'llseebouttheKohler omg that's hilarious

I'm glad you don't have money for the diesel anyway. Keeping the Kohler is the more fiscally responsible option anyway.

I always question if spending money on a mower is fiscally responsible anyway

Ya'll just don't understand. The whole time we've lived here we couldn't afford a compact tractor. Now we have this, with a steering gear box, a three eighths steel c channel frame, cast iron everything else, cast iron trans, 5 bolt rear axles, 23" tires stock, this thing is a sub-sub-compact tractor. The frame-trans can clear land and she can pull stumps out of the ground. Only thing is an 8 horse single can't do that. A 10 horse diesel can. Looked around, it'd cost about $500 to get one. Thats cheaper than a Kabota for sure. If I get a diesel, I'm not paying for it, its going to come out of the ranch fund.

Those are 8hp Kohlers?

Why dont you get one of the kohlers running and just see what it can do?

Id love to see how big a stump you could get it to pull. Ive cut off small trees about 4ft high, hooked the chain up high for extra leverage and pulled 3-4in diameter with my ss16.

So... 8in?

Im not sure the old girl can do it! Not without alot of digging? Ofcourse, maybe you got easy digging down there... I have rocks, and a little bit of dirt. Oh, and more rocks! I think weight and traction will be your friend.
Given the limited power, would gearing it lower... something like a super granny haha.  scratch

Ide love to see what you come up with to make it a stump puller.

Oh that kohler could be built to make more power than that diesel I think. Heck, Id even put money on it! lol!

[mod]OK, not sure where this is going. I see where DWCR is going with his thinking. Everyone has made a point to save the Kohler. It's his tractor, let's support him in building whatever rig he wants to make out of it.[/mod]

Obviously converting a vertical engine to work horizontal isn't really an economical option. On a Ranch having a diesel can have advantages. Power, economy, multi fuel sources possible. Not sure how much pulling power the old girl has, we don't know the mods you have planned. If you can find one at a good price, go for it.

Carry on.

I just assumed it was an 8hp because it looks like a k181 to me, same engine as in Carl's Wheel Horse and it's certainly not underpowered. These old Kohler's have more low end grunt that high end power so saying that it has no power because it's an 8 horse is incorrect. I guess at this point it's his rig and whatever he does I'm sure it will work fine and be pretty neat. But I will finish by saying I have a Kohler K160 which is a 6hp in my Bolens Versamatic, and I have used it to pull a moldboard plow through the ground at just above idle, no problem.

I thought the "110" on the hood would mean its a 10hp?

Any tags on the engines W?

Could be, according to TractorData.com they came with either engine. So I guess you wont know until you look at the engine tag.

Well on Saturday I got to move a lot of snow with my friends John Deere 4210 tractor equipped with a loader. I was really impressed with it, so I think it would be cool to see a diesel John Deere utility build. Hey most John Deere tractors bigger than a riding mower are diesel anyway.

My neighbor has a 3 cylinder yanmar deere garden tractor. It has a three point hitch, pto, hydraulic front attachments, and 30 inch rear tires. The muffler cello off awhile ago so it's super loud but sounds awesome! He didn't like my idea of borrowing that engine for one of my mowers.

Yeah it has 4 gears with neutral and reverse.
Crazy_Carl wrote:
That's not a bad idea.  It's better than using the briggs for sure.  But come on there's already a ton of diesel all terrain lawn tractors out there.  Not enough of them with the good ole Kohlers in them.
Well it wasn't going to be a all terrain tractor.  It needs to be able to drive off road a bit, just to get from one point to another.
AllisKidD21 wrote:
I actually found a picture online of a diesel clone in a 112, the frame had to be cut, the hood was also cut up, and the whole hood had to be raised 3" to clear. It didn't look right in my opinion, plus there was some welding involved. And that was only for a yanmar clone, so a bigger one would be a nightmare. The Kohler K Series are workhorses, I don't think you'd have a lack of power even with just a K181.
This guy didn't have to.

Yeah it is a 181.  I'm probably going to just so I can drive it before I get some money.

Well with the vari drive I can change the ratio easily.  I have 28 gears forward and 7 gears back.

The vari-drive, you can see the 7 knotches for shifter placement.

Oh and sidenote, it is a K-181, found this tag on the side.
I think what I'll do is make sure the rod is snapped, then swap the rod from one of the other engines. Just to get it john - $25 1968 John Deere 110 Pre-Build - Page 3 102878487 until I can get a diesel.

So does it have a variable speed pulley setup like these crappy mtds?

W wrote:

Are the other 8hp aswell?
Im not sure, it might be just as much work to swap the engine and put the carb and whatnot from the one on the tractor on the spare engine?

Thats a good idea. Get it running and moving, see what its capable of now. Then make a plan to make it even better.

Have you pulled the head to make sure you dont just have a stuck valve? The parts to rebuild those motors aren't really all that bad. It would be awesome if you could get a billet rod in there.

Not yet, I'm going to.  But it has way yonder too much momentum (when you spin it once it spins 5-6 times by itself) and it makes scraping noises.  I don't see how it could spin that much even if a valve was stuck open.
Yeah a billet rod would be sweet, but I don't think I'm ultimately keeping the Kohler in this tractor.

Yeah your connecting rod is screwed thoroughly. That's a definite connecting rod failure, and the valves on these kohler are very heavy duty and I think it would take quite a bit to get one stuck, also you said that when you put a screw driver in it and there was no piston movement or something

He said no valve movement either. Now I’m not sure exactly how these kohlers are put together, but I’m pretty sure if the con-rod was the only thing wrong the valves would still move
