Not saying you shouldn't add a skid plate if you really want to...

That said, my group runs without them and we run through some pretty abusive stuff.
In 15 years or so of running these machines, we have never damaged anything underneath by hitting rocks, logs, or other obstacles. The only annoyance we have dealt with that a skid plate would prevent is the very rare stick getting in the belt or shifter linkage when riding through high weeds.

Not trying to dampen enthusiasm on your project, it is after all YOUR project, which is what makes this forum cool.
I would just prefer to put the resources and time into other aspects of my ride.
