Without a welder- youd need an extra pair of spider gears to lock the whole assembly , then bolt them in with grade 8 bolts - eventually you might want to upgrade to a peerless 700 ( the trans with a lower input pulley and a side output sprocket) and a 1" or bigger straight axle - using a pair of pillow block berings to support the axle.

Good thing about that setup is it can be lifted easily.

What he said basically. I opted for the extra spider gear method on mine.

Yes! Razz
Did you put gear oil in it?
If so they will still do it a bit but not as bad.

Yeah, why do all those MTD's do that even stock.
I hate it, when i go to sell one people are like that thing needs a tranny.

Just cheap designs I guess, lack of proper grease in the right places.
Its MTD. SHame, I like their older tractors

But gear whine is normal, just make sure you use some htick gear oil if you're going much faster than stock

MTD's whine alot because the factory puts about a half handful of bennonite grease in the trans.

My stock 97 mastercut howls like crazy when im in high gear and mowing - even the 91 mod MTD howls pretty good, even after socking new grease in it. Oddly, my 90 MTD task force is pretty quiet tho.

I thought of using oil in the mod MTD, but after i put some in another MTD, it all just leaked out- so i put zerks in it and sock the heck out of it with grease every other time i run it. Im thinking about doing that on my mowing MTD's as well.

Probably a peerless or spicer.
Is it a 5 or 6 speed?
They are all pretty much the same on the inside.

I have a factory service manual with all the break downs and part numbers for all peerless trannys.

Let me know if you need info on your tranny and i could scan it for you and post it.

Traction will be awsome, however steering will be horrible- dont plan on any super tight turning after locking a trans.

My wizard build and future wheelhorse build will have straight axles, then again those will be more for speed then actual turning.

i locked the diff in my lt4000 it turns as tight as it did the day i got it and i have atv tires on it, trick is i slide my ass to the side on the outside of the turn so it lifts up the inside tire and it allows it to skid. this will reduce the amount of grass ripped and also reduce the stress on the welds and axles

That's the opposite of what you think to do though. It would take some getting used to I guess.

thats what the racers do- they 'push' the rear of the tractor around the corners with thier butts- they make some pretty good rooster tails once the grass is torn off. Thats why alot of racers also have that support bar to the right side of the seat- so they dont slide off.
