if i dont lock it what will be the down side to mudding and drifting?

Not sure about mudding/drifting, but it will not be anywhere near as effective in the woods in general.

In my opinion:

I recommend it locked for muddin, you'd want both tires working together.

Not for drifting though, one wheel peel will allow you more control.

Nice, solid welds. You can also try fozzy lockers.

I never weld on the gears or gear basket.
