Whatever is cheaper. V-twins start a little easier with the compression release. I have a 20 hp intek v-twin, and a 19.5 opposed twin, they run right together on speed and power.

Opposed is a little simpler, very common, and little cheaper.

They both have loads of torque.  The oppy's have some problems though.  There is an oil slinger in the bottom of the motor, that is what slings the oil to the top of the motor.  Those bearings that are in the slinger are prone to go.  When that does go you will blow your motor.  Those plates on the bottom of the motor are hard to find because they are no longer available.  The V-Twins have their fair share of issues too.

V-Twins I think have more performance parts available because that is what most of the racers use.  That is what I think anyways.  Not 100% sure.

All in all, they are both good motors. I would settle for both if they were cheap enough and either of them can fit in the tractor.

Opposed twins use more fuel.

V-twins have pressure lubrication so they can be run for extended periods at low speed, and run at angles (side hill, climbing hills, etc.) without worry of lubrication failure.

They did make a few opposed with oil filters, but I'm not sure if they were a full pressure design.

V-twins are newer design so they usually have better current output for lighting.

Oppys make great boat anchers. And thats about it. Iv had several and ive never had one out perform my single OHV. i beleave the carb is the big problem with oppys and all the ones iv had stall in steep hills or rough terrain going fast. I dont like oppys but thats me. Lot of people on here love them. They just dont work for me.

And for a twin find a vangard not a GLS model. If you talk to most briggs dealers thay say the vangard is the best briggs twin made

Go with a v twin. If they wernt good why would motor cycles and atvs and most autos have a v style motors in them. I know there are a couple of opposed style motors but lets face it most of them ar forein.

Parts are hard to come by for briggs opposed?  They made 4 MILLION of them, parts and engines are everywhere.

That's why I like the opposed, they are cheap and plentiful.  The run just fine in our tractors, and we beat the crap out of them.  I've had one rod failure in an old engine, it had a bad oil leak, and ran out of oil.

Fuel wise, we run both on the trails, side by side, and both use about the same amount of gas.

I like the v-twins also, but the intek's are more finicky to get the carb right, and not as common.

I would go with whatever you can get, as long as it runs, you will fine either way. It's like a BMW vs Harley argument, I prefer not to take a side, both have good and bad, as long as it runs I myself would be happy with either one. And yes that is an oppy in my profile pic.

My dad got a briggs small engine/ mower shop. The vanguard are a really heavy duty motor. Just by picking one up compared to an Intek you may be able to tell its heavier. Most of the tractors we sell used to have vanguard in them but they got switched to inteks because they are lighter engines for the frame of a light duty lawn tractor. If you look at most Ferris commercial zero turns they pretty much all have vanguard. They also have vanguard BIG BLOCKS!!! Now they are also coming out with an efi vanguard. I have an intek now in my possession with a possible internal governor out of wack (don't need it anyways for what I will use it for) I will do some tests and check stuff out and compare it to my vanguard.

I would also take a vtwin exhaust sound over an oppy sound. Vtwins just sound really cool, right stretch44875? lol

For me, the argument of opposed twin vs V-Twin is kind of secondary. Sure- the opposed is a boxer engine, and the v is, well- a v-block. However... the more important point to me is the fact that the oppy is an l-head, whereas the v is overhead valve. By very nature, the OHV is more efficient, and more powerful for it's size.

Case in point: Briggs 18hp oppy? 42 cubic inches displacement. Briggs Vanny V twin, also at 18hp? 35 cubic inches. You do the math.

If I were offered the choice between the two, in the same condition at the same price, I would go Vanny every time. Not the Intek, mind you- I think they are basically junk.

Both the boxers and the vees have ups and downs. Some of It comes down to personal preference.

Everyone saying that oppys are gas hogs must me holding them WFO all the time. I can cruise/romp all day on around a half tank and not worry about running out of gas. Granted, mine is stock and still governed, but an oppy none the less.....
