I wonder if a throttle body from an old 90s car would work as an air shut off...

I have been having problems with the 7 hp, and it is a bit small. I want this knockoff of a gx390 for my engine. Do any of you guys have any experience with these in general? the electric start version of this motor is $360 at hf (plus tax) and this is $230 + $40 for shipping.I have wanted a big block clone for some time, do you guys think that would be a good buy? the real honda gx390 is like $900. I am still looking for oppy parts, and that is my first priority.

Thanks Doc. I am trying to get spark, and even with the automotive coil, it won't work. I will get it running on gas first and then diesel. I ran the landlord on half gas and half kero, but it has to crank for a long time to start up, and it won't run as fast.

Maybe turn up the timing on the motor abit. Adding kerosene to gas, it changes the burn rate of the fuel. Kerosene or diesel( diesel being a lower grade of kerosene), the charictoristics of this fuel compared to gasoline is a higher octane rating and a slower burning of fuel. Advancing the timing should do the trick. I would suggest on deciding on a mix ratio and stick with it. Keeping a certain amount of gasoline in the mix will ensure ignition of the fuel, maybe 50/50 mix to start with. Abvancing the timing is a must since kerosene burns slower and smoother and kerosene having a higher octane rating the engine will handle it with no problem. I personally never did this mix or played with the idea of this, but I have done my own brews on other mixes. You'll probable have to mess with the jetting of the carb also, maybe leaner, I'm guessing though. If you figure this out it can open the door to other posabilities too. Good luck.

I got some 25x10 atv tires for this. I can't get them to hold air and the rims are rusted real bad, so what do you guys think about using sheetrock screws to hold the tires on the rim and just running them flat? the tires have punctures in them and won't hold air that well. with no air they sit about right on the ground. (I got them used for $40 so I can't complain)

Why run tires when you can just wire wheel the rims bead?......

Tires have holes in the tread (big holes) so I figured since they would just kill tubes anyway it would be advantageous to not have to worry about tires coming off the rim.

Flat half a$$ed tires will ride like junk and that will ruin your rims arnt even worth running these tires if they have holes bigger than pencils.

Fill the tires up with foam. Make them into runflats. Murry mahem did a couple of bids on that

I don't know. Might hold up that way for awhile, but I would think the sidewalls would eventually get soft and they would fold around a lot. I would guess the sheetmetal screws would eventually tear out of the tires too. I suppose no harm in trying it if the rims are really bad though. If you had to upgrade, just find new rims and tires. I don't know how many holes you have, But I've had good luck patching over the holes first, then using a tube.

Murry mahem said they would last for a year. 1 good size tire would take around 3 cans of foam. You need to watch the bid to deside though.

Yeah I guess I should get tubes. I have another bad idea: convert a 12 hp ohv or my 17 hp pressure lube ohv tecumseh motor to horizontal and run it in this. What do you guys think about that? I would have way more hp than the 7 hp that is in it.

just get ya some tubes would be best, foam in a can is 6.99 a can here by the time u put 3 in each can u could buy new tubes all around and foam tends to break down pretty quick when there is weight on it and crumbles as well

Converting vertical shaft to horizontal is do-able. Gotta mount it, reconfigure oiling, and carb mounting of course. I think it would be neat to weld or bolt some kind of bracket to the mower frame and just use the stock engine mounting holes if you were going to do that. Would be different. If you welded up a decent bracket, you could bolt one side to your vertical shaft engine and the bottom to the stock mounting holes. Like an adaptor plate.

Yeah that is what I am thinking. the vertical I have has flats on the part that would be the mount base, so I was planning to make an angle iron bracket that bolts to it and then to the frame.the motor is pressure lube, so I am going to make a new pickup tube.

I did a conversion like that on my APU for jumping cars. worked out good with the way you are thinking and with a tekumsa motor too. Still running too. To do it I epoxied the removable screen while off then drilled a 1/4 hole in it to run a tube from the screen to the bottom of motor when it is a horizontal shaft. and just made sure the tube didn't hit the crank.

Briggs oppeys would be hard to do because of the splash oiling system. Tecumsa motors have the pressure oiling systems you can modify easily.

an idea for the footrests:

machine - My 1962 Simplicity 700 PTM (Pulling Trail Machine) - Page 2 Build-26

I got the blade and made a linkage for it

machine - My 1962 Simplicity 700 PTM (Pulling Trail Machine) - Page 2 Build-27

It needs some pulley work, as it does not disengage the belt right now and I shift by slamming it into gear. I have the rototiller for this as you can see the pto parts on the back of it. I want to make a rear rack for this that pins on the rototiller mounts, but we will see.

I hate belt issues... Foot rests shouldn't be too hard to rig up. I guess you could just come down with a bracket or something.

I took this to a pull and I have a vid on my youtube (Jason Cronk) if you want to see it. Since the vid I got the carb adjusted right so it runs good at full throttle.

Ok got the vid for you guys. Top speed of 10 mph on trails. It works good for trail riding, but I use it mainly for pulling.

This is all I can do for the build off on this. This build is complete. Stay tuned for my other build off entries, the mini quad has gotten a facelift and some other secret details.

I am planning on repainting the PTM, if I can find the right shade of orange. All the paint I have found isn't bright enough. Someone said that chevy engine orange is pretty close, I may try to get some of that. It runs on desel, I start it on gas, run it for about 1min on gas and switch to desel and turn the mixture screws out 1/2 turn on the idle and 1 on the main. doesn't smoke much, at idle it makes more noise than on gas, but It doesn't detonate much, it only has about 40 lbs of compression anyway.
