It's not valve related. When it was run low on oil for hours it probably wore the cylinder and it now has a little bit of piston slap, causing the knock. That's what the knock sounds like to me anyways.
This would also be why it's burning oil, because the cylinder is worn.

@RockeyDA Well it's needs to be tuned at full throttle. Problem is when the engine is under load the governor lets in more air which will lean it a tad. The best method I've found is to turn your carb to factory specs, tweak it by feel (I struggle with this), and then check your spark plug after a hard run to see if you're running rich or lean.
sounds to hard, dont even know how a spark plug will tell me, think ima rig somthg up so i can play with it while driving and do a mountan climb, i can send it full bore trying to get up mountnittany

I think a tan colour indicates a nice clean burn. Black is rich, clean lean.

really wish i could find a set of rings and new headgasket for this motor.
maybe some other rings off a newer briggs will fit, & 4 the headgasket just put RTV between head & Block that pushes Compression a tiny bit & will be sealing

Sending stuff means that U just run it til it blows up
so what? are you telling me to not put oil in it and destroy a motor that should be a cheepely saved motor? i mean theres no rod play and the wall looks pretty good, and i was able to save headgasket. if i could just find a new set of rings i would basicly have a new motor.

I send stuff as well, but I add Oil to my Oil Burners as well, cuz even do the Fact I send it instead of rebuilding it I want that stuff to last as long as possible with low maintenance & topping off Oil or changing it is not much work

i dont think the 16hp briggs is going to have a big fail, i think its just going to keep loseing compression till its not derivable.

Yeah, but you can damage the cylinder walls beyond repair this way. I think that you might have piston slap, and the longer you run it like that, the worse it gets and it's very expensive to repair.

is it worth it TJ??
That Engine worked hard since 70s & is on its time to go downhill. Same with my 93 Flathead.. no rod knock or anything, but a leaking crank seal & worn rings & no feeling to fix it even due the Face I have severar Rings lying around, just would need a new crank seal...

Check out isavetractors.com, they have a $50 piston kit for the Briggs 320000 engines.
