| I llike hydros 'cause the drive smoother and you dont get a "slack" felling when you pop the clutch, i dont like them 'cause when trying to go fast out of mud they cut out because the pump doesnt pick up the fluid, forcing me to drive slowly. i think we all know why i love manuals........ | |

| For an all-terrain toy I prefer a manual; re-gearing for speed is simple, no cooling issues to worry about, and the trans itself is simple to repair if something lets go.
Now in a garden tractor I prefer a hydrostatic over gear drive, especially if plowing or pulling in wet soil or mud.

| Hydros are also alot heavier than the other ones so that might sink you down faster in the mud | |

| Racing or mudding, gear trannys.
Mowing, hydro. Way faster to back up and manuver. Also handy to move trailers(car/truck) around.
I have a zero turn with twin hydros, no deck. Need to find some tracks for it, make a kick ass mini tank.

| Save the hydro's for lawnmowing or light trail riding - they wont handle any climbing/mudding.
You have more control with a geared manual trans then a hydro in different situations - its the same as a automatic trans and a manual trans in a vehicle - i had an automatic trans in my car, it sucked terrible in snow/traction loss situations - next vehicle was a manual trans pickup, thing would go virutally anywhere , no matter how much there was and i had control of shifting, not the trans.
I have mostly manual transmissions in my tractors, cept for a lone '99 twin 17HP hydro murray - which i plan to get back to mowing shape soon - its interesting never owning one before , just like my 4 wheel steer MTD - its cool, just not sure how ill like to mow with it tho after years of shifting.
Manual trans dont have as many possible issues tho, as long as theyre not abused.

| I love mowing with a hydro, especially when they utilize a pedal system instead of the stick. I wouldnt trail ride with one though, ive ruined a pump just mowing with a hydro on my lawn. | I personally would never used a Hydro, I only have a manual gearbox on my tractor, so I cant speak from experience but prefer having a physical connection between the wheels and the engine. Oil based gearboxes limit what you can do, eg, bump starting, towing heavy loads.
For this same reason, I would never buy or drive out of choice, a car or truck with an automatic gearbox.

| Ya, the stick hydro is really just a pain. But I do use it for heavy work, hauling, and snow plowing. | |

| Honestly i hate hydros for anything other then symple lawn mowing, cause you can't pulley swap them, and they suck in the mud. | |

| I love hydros the only problem I had was the shaft that can off the back to the transaxle to put it in and out of gear in to neutral I took it apart and found that it had ground down just a little so I cleaned it up and put a nice thick weld on it and never had a problem it was on the dlt 3000 but I love them have one in my 99 craftsman 19.5 goes thru snow and mud no problem | |
