The project that could be...
That Sears custom has tormented me all week so far. Visiting my wife's grandmother here in New London, Ohio. Guy is selling this custom across the street for $75. Doesn't run but it appears all there.
If it were back home. It would be in my garage.

That's a good looking unit, and what a steal for $75! What kinda transaxle is in it mighty?

I think they had a 633A71 which is like the 633A38 just minus the high-low.
Oh ok. Looks like a 60's model.

It's in pretty good shape for its age!

I'm trying to sell my Sears custom right now. I think mine is a bit newer than yours. Maybe mine is around 1968? I bought it for $100 at an engine show I always go to, but it had the aluminum deck still on with the 90 degree angle gear boxes. The seat is gone because that's the one I used for the simplicity adventure edition. I actually mowed grass with it for a year. Came with it's original owners manual and paperwork. Engine was replaced in 1982, this is the pull start only model.
Back section of frame is the same as the sears suburban, the front half is shorter and lower I think. They are neat looking and I have thought of using this one for a build, but there would be a lot of parts swapping required and I'm busy with other stuff at the moment.

I see that one is a four speed. Does it have a Peerless 2300 or is it also a Roper trans?

Didn't know I was selling it.....I'm selling everything remember?! You don't need more stuff right now. You can catch the next one looool
Yeah the 1-2nd gear thing is a bit odd. I actually have a spare one of these transmissions too, in rough shape but it turns free and everything. Cast iron case. I don't care for them much, they don't have the greatest mounting spots. Only one bolt on top of each side of the rear axle and not sure up front. I've had this one slip out of gear a couple times going up hills when mowing, don't know if that's a design issue or just worn out? When you put it in gear, doesn't feel as positive as a 633 does. Has a sloppier feel.

Not sure if it would have been any less of a headache or not. I think the stock trans might be kinda cruddy for off roading, maybe not tho, might be ok.
