The AWS axles are shorter and have a spline on the end, along with a different case. Although you can swap the knuckles and axles into regular cases(900 and MST series cases).

The big problem I think I’m going to run into is finding parts if something on the actual tractor breaks. Not the engine, the tractor.

Well, aside from the tranny, most things could be fabbed up with a welder and some scrap steal.

I’m gonna start tearing into it tonight. I think I’m gonna check the carb bowl first

Yeah, that's usually the cause of that issue is junk in the bowl. Spray some carb cleaner on it and put it back on, probably will work then unless the fuel line is clogged.

Sounds like you need to "hot wire" the tractor to get it to turn over. Find the kill wire coming from the ignition coil, unhook it so it isn't grounded to anything, then use a wrench to jump the two big terminals on the solenoid together and it should kick over if the battery is good.

I'd just jump it off the starter.
After that, check the obvious...like if there is a fuel shut off, make sure it's open. If it doesn't start after that, first thing is to take the carb bowl off. There will either be a nut under there, or a big cylinder object thing down there. Remove it and the bowl will fall off.
If it has it, the cylinder thing is the anti afterfire solenoid. Just bypass it.
If the carburetor has gunk in it, then buy some carb cleaner and spray it inside and then wipe it out. Assemble it and try to start it again. From the symptoms you gave earlier, this should start it. If not, buy new fuel line and a fuel filter, and a new fuel shut off. Walmart has them, Tractor Supply has them, places like that. That should get it running well.
In order to prevent the same issue, when you shut it off for more than a week, turn the fuel shut off to the closed position while it's running, and just walk away. This will drain the carb so it will not get gunked up again.
Sorry for the surge of info, just want to help you get soon!!!

I just tried actually starting it from the key switch. And it actually turns over.

Well if it's a hydro, a pulley swap won't work.

GOOD news it is a transaxle not a hydrostatic.

Well judging by the shifter gate and the "Automatic Transmission" label on the side, it actually is a hydrostat. Unless someone swapped a geared AWS transaxle in it at some point, which I suppose is possible.

A hydrostatic transaxle is just a hydraulic transaxle. They mount the same way in the same place. Pulley swapping a hydro will blow up the pump

Bigger tires, maybe a really small pulley swap, like on the rear, go 1/2 inch down, that probably won't kill it. Tune up the gov a little. Hydros have like 7-8 MPH anyway, it's not like the geared trannys, where they stock have 3.5 mph. So you could maybe get it up to 10. But bigger tires is definently the safest way to hop her up, the other ways might hurt the tranny.
