locked axle??

I  ran my old wards mower up against the door frame of my garage and let out on the clutch [first gear]  and both tires spun and burned rubber piles in my driveway.......has somebody welded the axle or are they all like this???..........I'll have to try this with my old lawn chief to see what it does........ these things are a new learning experience for me!

It's possible, do you have info (model number) and photos of it?

I find that the best way to test for lockers is to jack up one side of the axle, let the brake out, put the tranny in neutral, and spin the lifted tire. If the other one stays then you have an open diff.

It’s possible you may not have enough slippage to make the diff work, but thats just my .02

If traction is that good it shoul do pretty good with chains and a blade on level ground.....I hope to find one soon......I've decided it would be better to buy than build.....

Possible limited slip? Sometimes I have to bust out my phone, take a pic and zoom in. LOL

If we're talking about the orange machine from your other thread I think it would've had to have been welded to be locked and highly doubt limited slip would've been an option but I could be wrong. It would be helpful for us to be able to help if you started a thread for the tractor with pictures of it from different angles, a picture of the rear diff (and numbers stamped in) and underhood. I've done some poking around and am having a hard time finding the match without being able to see more details (headlights, shifter, dashboard ect). It's definitely MTD and not Gilson built, my best guess is late 70's to very early 80's, the fan shroud could come from a different engine or like you said it could have had the engine replaced. My machine has a metal stamped tag just behind the seat where yours has that big box. Our machines are extremely similar, mine could be just a couple years newer it's a 1983/84ish.

I'll do a little detective work, now that I have it all wired and running good, I need to find the right carb for it to........I have a good "taryle dactle" in town that has a yard full of mowers, but he is taking a few weeks off, he had a busy season....
