Other than my old ford mower we are working on, we have been working on turning our old storage shed into a good useable mower/small engine workshop. I've been using a floor jack which is ok but I want to be able to get more lift out of it. Considering building a pulley system attached to an electric or hand winch to use as an overhead hoist/crane. Anyone here has ever done this or currently has one? Shops not big and I want to keep this as out of the way as possible.

This sounds like something good. I've often thought about something like Taryl Fixes All youtuber did, but in a much smaller form. Something that would fit in and out a standard house garage door.
Currently I use an engine hoist "cherry picker" when I do need something.

we have a 2-post vehicle hoist but like @mightyraze said, I also use a engine crane all the time and it works great, those "lawn tractor lifts" you see at department stores are crap, I have one that someone gave to me and I hate it

Depending on how much you want to lift, a simple pulley and come along could work for very little money.
