only ay I know of would be a piston stop of some kind, you can fill the cylinder with rope, or find a bolt that can thread into the head at the sparkplug hole, but you do run the chance of causing some damage to the top of the piston doing this, I prefer the rope method my self because it does not damage the piston, the only other method I know of is to purposely hydro lock it

Put the nut on the crank (2-3 turns), spray it with liquid wrench or wd40, and hit the nut with a hammer. If that doesn't work, at least my local AutoZone will loan pullers.

Doesn't exactly put a smile on my face seeing an old engine being treated like that.
Oh well, probably time for a Honda clone or something.
i got 1 more thing to try today, if that failes then im going to a 12hp cast iron briggs. as far as the 16hp motor goes, i dont care how much i mess it up if i can get it to run agin. i dont see the point of having something that dose not work.

So this engine had a sheared flywheel key all along. I wonder how a flywheel puller would have worked on this.
a little end of the weekend progress update. i got the fly wheel installed with new keystock and that nut back on. it sucked to get on about as much as it did to get off once it broke free. i had to go to a family get together dinner thing, but the time i got back it was 5:30 and i did not have much light left under the trees. i cleaned up the gasket crap between the 2 halves of the motor, and found 2 of 4 bolts and washers. then i threw a tarp over it and cleaned up for the night. its basicly going to be sunset by the time i get off work for now on so i cant make progress on this during the week anymore. so see you guys in 4 days.
oh, damage or not, i think this motor is going to run, and im actually really exited that i have been able to save the stock motor, hopefully the fly wheel was the only problem, and that bearing i damaged dose not explode or something.

I seriously would not run that flywheel after the way it was treated. There's a reason we don't smack flywheels with steel hammers. Did you happen to put a new crank bearing in to replace the damaged one?

i cold not get it off, it still rotates, if it goes i guess i can dremel it out. but as of now im using what i got. also i wielded the broken off bits to the fly wheel back together, shold be relatively balanced agin. for a governed setup i think that is more than enough. i run dinky ungoverned with bits of the blower broken off on 1 side with no problem.

i cleaned up the bottom part of the block alittle before i threw it together.
tomrrow i tighten my bolts, put some oil in it, rap a pice of a rag arround the intake with alittle gas on it, and try to give it some pulles, see if i can get alittle life out of it.
if i get that life i will cut grind and weld if need be something up to replace what i stole from the governor. if i still have daylight then i beginning installing and assembling of the 990. if i have a successful test drive of the tractor befor or during the weekend im using this paycheck to buy some new tires for the rear.
