I get the traveler brand 15-40 diesel oil for 15-20 bucks for a 2 gallon jug. That’s what I run in my ranger. Doesn’t burn the thick stuff as fast. I know @redzz02 runs 15-40 diesel oil in all his tractors except the built engine in the mud dynamark since he keeps spare 15-40 on hand for his truck

I run shell rotella T4 15w40 in my truck cause that's all I can run in it unless I run a zinc additive. Being a hydraulic flat tappet cam if I dont I'll wipe cam lobes. As far as small engines I normally run Kohler engine oil just cause it also has zinc in it. I've run small engines with just regular oil with no issues..I'm assuming it's because the springs aren't that stiff compared to a car. But it definitely doesn't hurt to run some zinc in them, especially since small engines typically dont have roller lifters..........the EPA sucks, wish oil was good like it was back in the day.

You need zinc because it's an anti wear additive that's made for metal on metal contact (like a flat tappet or hydraulic flat tappet camshaft which pretty much every car and truck has, before 1988.) New oil doesnt have zinc in it because the epa decided that it clogged up catalytic converters so they removed it. Basically if you dont either buy a special oil or run some sort of zinc additive your probably going to have pre mature camshaft wear which will lead to wiping a cam lobe and eventually camshaft failure. New vehicles 1988 and newer dont need zinc or as much because they have roller lifters.
You do need alot of zinc on initial start up (on a vehicle) but its important to still run oil with zinc (not necessarily STP oil treatment) but something like diesel oil because it still contains the amount of zinc needed to support a flat tappet cam. The EPA demanded that oil companies lower the amount of zinc sometime in the early 2000s era (not too sure) because they said that catalytic converters needed to last longer and the reason why they were failing (after high milage) was because of the exhaust and somehow zinc had something to do with it.
People in the hot rod community were not happy at all because oil companies never said anything about this. I've heard it's not as noticeable when you have a mild to stock camshaft because of the duration and spring pressure but when you have upgraded valve springs and and a pretty good cam you will kill a cam faster. Either way it wears out faster so I just make sure I run good oil in my truck.
Theres a bunch of science and stuff about it on the internet but I really cant comprehend half of it so if you want to know more that's where I'd look!

Uh.... I thought I lived in Oklahoma? They went from a couple inches to this in a matter of 4 hrs.
Already been an unreal year. We typically get 3-4 inches a year. We've already had over 12-16 inches total this season in various storms. I know this is prob nothing to ya northerners!

20 is decent size up here too. Fun fact- Syracuse, NY has the second highest annual snowfall of any city, beaten out by Anchorage Alaska. It’s like how you guys get rain down there- I saw the blowing wind and it looked like a hurricane, but snow around here is usually just an annoyance. The most I have ever seen is about 2’ 6” in 12 hours, Be careful if you have to drive, the plows can’t keep up with those bigger storms.
Here is a big storm we had a couple months ago:
My rear tires are 28” in reference.

Well this past Wednesday we had an ice storm come through and it just wont go away. Everything has been frozen for the past five days and it just keeps raining and freezing more. My old truck is basically an ice cube at this point, I'll maybe get a picture tomorrow but its completely covered in a half inch layer of ice. Good news is that our trees are holding up well, they look awful and most of the limbs are touching the ground but as far as I know none of limbs have broke yet. Everyone elses seems to be taking a beating but ours are doing pretty good. I dont let our trees grow out real wide and bushy like everyone else does so maybe that has something to do with it.
Cant get outside much cause its freaking cold and our new garage doesnt have any heat yet. I went out to the scrap metal pile and I couldn't even pick up anything cause it was frozen together. I'm going to have to start making some cordless hair dryers and start selling them.
Besides that school started back partially in person last week.....ended up only going for one day because people around here cant drive or dont know how to drive in the snow and ice. They think they can just drive 80 mph like they always do and be fine, so everyone wrecks. I dont know how they wreck, these new cars have all this technology now. It's kinda funny to have all these new cars spin out and end up in ditches and then they just see me cruze past them in my 54 year old truck with manual brakes, 4 wheel drum brakes, manual steering, literally horse and buggy technology and I've never spun out, slid on ice or anything like that. I just take it easy and dont drive too fast and I watch out for icey areas.
Maybe if they didnt make new cars out of beer cans they'd actually weigh enough to get traction. Now watch I say that and tomorrow I'll completely fly off the road and die

Mighty has a nice ol square body! Maybe he'll show some pictures of his.
Little story here...
This is our original Ol' Blue. 75 Chevy 3/4T Custom Deluxe. I rattle can painted back in high school. It was 88cent walmart sky blue! This paint is still on the carcass today. The floor was about completely rotted out. It was starting to go around the seat. Then, while my brother was using it back in 1999. He lost his house to the Moore, OK May 3 tornado. This truck was about the only survivor. It lost all windows but the rear window. Right Front fender and hood were lost as well. It had a lot of rock "bullet holes" through it. I did get it looking decent. Found a fender, passenger door and a new hood. The cab was bent enough that I had to do a lot of massaging to get the fender and door back on.
Picture from Sr Year High School. 93.
Enter a free 78 1T Silverado Trailer Edition. It was minus an engine and trans. We were going to use it for parts, but my Dad and I decided to put the 350 and trans from Ol' Blue into this truck instead of parting it.
We did that, and I decided it needed a rattle can paint job!
2014
Completed.
Here it is last summer. Same paint.
Wife and I have been talking about fixing it back up a bit.

Chevy for the win!!!! Those are very nice trucks. I have a friend with a 1 ton international (can’t remember the year or model, it’s been a while) with a 454 swapped in. I’m more into the vintage semis (Brockway) but I still think the old Chevys are the bees knees! I’d like to get a 57 1 ton and swap in a Mercury SB4 someday. I like the colors too, blue is the best color for a truck

Does the OBS Chevy GMT400 count as classic? I’ve got two of them, the first one I got for free as a grad present from the high school maintenance guy. ‘94 c1500 regular cab long bed 4.3 v6 5 speed 2wd. Cheyanne trim level. Frame was rusted out so I had to patch in a new panel
Then I got this ‘89 c1500 regular cab short bed out of an impound lot for 400 bucks. Sat there for 8 years. Chevy sport trim, 350 5 speed. 3.08 gears. The engine had barely any power once I got it running, couldn’t even maintain speed in 5th it was so bad. Then I blew it up in a spectacular fashion so it’s all torn apart waiting for me to finish the 5.3 LS swap on it, here’s some before and after pics (before the engine let go)
This was sent to me by the previous owner. This was circa 2011, before the wreck.

For whatever reason, photobucket quit working for me, so I’ll have to post the pics of how I got it and after I fixed it later. Or if you want, @twinturbo_89 is my insta, all the pics are on there

Man! Now I like my 67 to 72 gm trucks but early square bodies just have a good look to em! I mean just look at it, 4wd, big 8 lugger axles, nice big mirrors that definitely ain't gonna get snagged off when your going through the woods, 33s fit with room to spare..............I think I need one of these.
My sister has a 1980 k10 (I think it's a Cheyenne), It's in the middle of getting painted and body worked. It'll probably be the first project once we get the garage done.
Heres my uncle's 79 k10 aka Black Betty. I think this thing is the coolest truck ever just because of how raw it is, plus when I was a kid I use to ride with him every time we went to go ride at capuchin so I thought it was really cool when I was a kid. He's had if for idk how long, traded an old dodge truck for it, but he uses it as an off road/ work/beater. I dont think theres a single part of this truck that doesn't have dents or has rusted away. Pretty much all the body panels have been written off. He's not one of these guys that goes and tares stuff up on purpose either, most of the dents and rubs are just from sliding into trees at 12 in the morning trying to pull some guy out of a mud hole cause they broke down and needed my uncle's help. (He's a mechanic) But he made the pipe bumpers which I think look tough. Also since he uses this thing so much the tailgate is worn to raw steel which I though was impressive. One thing I will never forget is when you hit a bump or a rough spot the chains that hold the tailgate up smack the back of the tailgate which is absolute nostalgic!
It's got a 305, bulldog 4 speed (gotta hold in second gear cause the synchronizers are worn out), 12 bolt front and rear axles (I dont think the front is a 10 bolt if I remember correctly), custom flat black paint job (he painted it with a brush ), it's got a red interior like what you would see in an oldsmobile or a buick from the 80s. Everything is wore slam out but it rides like a Cadillac off road. Believe it or not It'll pull stumps out of the ground...not big ones but it flat out squats almost to the ground but it gets them out. You never forget the sound either, my uncle calls them drag pipes cause the drag on anything you drive over but its basically just straight piped with burnt out glasspacks cut off at the back of the cab, dangling by the manifolds. Sounds like a truck, got your typical stock SBC sound!
Funny story! He got this boat trailer from a guy and to get the boat off the trailer they tied the boat to a tree and yanked the trailer out from underneath it!
Sorry for rambling it was just a big part of my childhood.

Well yesterday I finally was able to open the door to my truck, since for the past 3 days the button was frozen solid and there was atleast a half inch of ice covering the door handle. I tried de-icer and I tried to chip away at it but I didnt make much progress. But yesterday it finally thawed out enough to get in, so I made a little cold start video. In the video its idling too low and thats why it dies on me. It normally doesnt idle that low when its warmed up.

That sounds AMAZING! Is that a small block? I took my dad’s ‘09 2500 5.3 up our mountain with a 1/2 ton of sand and a v plow up front. Sang better than anything I can find on the radio.

If it’s a 2500 gasser, it’s a 6.0
1500 gasser could be 4.8/5.3
Unless he swapped in a 5.3 for some reason......

Hahaha! I've honestly never heard that one before! They should put that on a T-shirt! "Sang better than anything I could find on the radio" Rustbucket Garage - 2021
But yeah it's just a little 283 (original motor to the truck) but my dad and my papaw rebuilt the motor when they re-did the truck in 92. I reckon when dad bought it in 89 it burnt oil pretty bad and he said he ran oil burners in 3 cylinders.... I think..... maybe 2? not sure, but anyway it was one of those when you stop to get gas you put a quart of oil in it. Lol!
But it ain't nothin fancey. Been bored 0.40 over, (So I guess that makes it 289 cubic inches) it's got an RV style cam, I dont know what it is or the specs and dad dont remember he just said it was small, it's got summit racing headers, new 2.5 inch exhaust with thrush welded mufflers, (flowmaster 40 series knock offs) it's got power pak heads which are original but they're 59cc heads so they give it good compression (I think stock they had 9 to 1 compression ratio so it ain't far from that) but the valves and ports are small so that kinda sucks, recently converted to electronic ignition, being that 67 was the last year for the 283 and being thatit's a truck this one has a cast bottom end, the earlier ones all had forged internals, its still running a 2 barrel carburetor, but I do have a 327 intake I'd like to swap on, just gotta get a 4 barrel carburetor, I have a 750 cfm quadrajet but it's too big for that little 283, Im looking for one around 500 cfm, should get better gas mileage with a four barrel.
Like I said aint nothing crazy. 283s only made 175 or 185 hp depending on what said it. The manual says 175 hp. It might make 200hp now but I doubt it. But the fuel ininjected 283s they put in the Corvettes made exactly 283 hp which is pretty cool!

Y'all probably dont care anything about the specs but when you ask me a question your gonna get the answer plus a bunch of information you didnt ask for and probably dont care about. And if ya know me ya know I like to ramble..... ALOT! I hate to say it but I'm definitely the annoying neighbor who comes and leans on your car while your working on it and talks your leg off all day and you dont get any work done. Lol!
I think the biggest reason is that none of my friends like any of this stuff as much as I do so it just builds up inside of me and then when someone even remotely shows any interest, it just all comes out at once.

I feel that so hard. My girlfriend doesn’t understand, my grandma (whom I live with) doesn’t understand, my mom and dad don’t understand, so when someone either knows anything mechanical or shows interest in wanting to learn, the flood gates open up and I dump ALL my knowledge on them all at once. Engines, suspension geometry, 2stroke vs 4 stroke vs rotary, solid axle vs independent suspension, gear ratios, power curves, driveshaft angles, ignition timing, port velocity in the heads, carb vs efi, different types of fuel injection, engine swaps, how to make a given trans work with a given engine, open deck vs closed deck block, etc...
