I feel that so hard. My girlfriend doesn’t understand, my grandma (whom I live with) doesn’t understand, my mom and dad don’t understand, so when someone either knows anything mechanical or shows interest in wanting to learn, the flood gates open up and I dump ALL my knowledge on them all at once. Engines, suspension geometry, 2stroke vs 4 stroke vs rotary, solid axle vs independent suspension, gear ratios, power curves, driveshaft angles, ignition timing, port velocity in the heads, carb vs efi, different types of fuel injection, engine swaps, how to make a given trans work with a given engine, open deck vs closed deck block, etc...

See now you got me going lol

That sounds AMAZING! Is that a small block? I took my dad’s ‘09 2500 5.3 up our mountain with a 1/2 ton of sand and a v plow up front. Sang better than anything I can find on the radio. Very Happy

If it’s a 2500 gasser, it’s a 6.0

1500 gasser could be 4.8/5.3

Unless he swapped in a 5.3 for some reason......

Oh okay. I’m bad about seeing Vortec and assuming 5.3. It’s a strong truck and I like driving it, it was a plow truck and the poor thing was beat to snot... won’t lock, short in the door somewhere, leaky exhaust manifold, and it’s needed a new power steering pump and parking brake. Rusty and dirty, but she gets it done.

I feel that. My folks bought a Lowe’s special John Deere  a few years back and I respect their choice, but it wouldn’t have been something I’d have condoned at the time. It seems to have held up fine though. My mechanically inclined grandfather  asks me sometimes how my project is going and I talk his poor ear off for 3-4 minutes cause I ramble and stuff. I build custom fishing rods as a side hobby and I can go on for days on that too.

Y'all probably dont care anything about the specs but when you ask me a question your gonna get the answer plus a bunch of information you didnt ask for and probably dont care about. And if ya know me ya know I like to ramble..... ALOT!
I hate to say it but I'm definitely the annoying neighbor who comes and leans on your car while your working on it and talks your leg off all day and you dont get any work done. Lol!

I think the biggest reason is that none of my friends like any of this stuff as much as I do so it just builds up inside of me and then when someone even remotely shows any interest, it just all comes out at once.

Amen to that.

@CraftsmanQuad19
I guess I'm lucky that both my papaws, my uncle, and my dad are all gearheads. I definitely couldnt do any of this stuff without them helping me out. Like for example: when I need to make something I just go out back and dig through the metal pile and find something to make it out of, and if we dont have what I'm looking for then I see if either one of my papaws have something that will work. But a lot of y'all have to go out and buy everything new. Nothing wrong with that, just makes me feel spoiled. Same thing with the garage and my truck, I feel blessed to have those things, I mean yeah I still pay and work for things but not as much as others. I'm definitely thankful that God has given me the opportunity to do all of this!

I can relate! I don't have any family who is mechanically inclined except my papa and my and my younger brother. I have a few friends who kinda like hearing about it but no one whose really into it. I do know though that I am very blessed to have a 1400sq ft fully heated, wired, and plumbed shop, the tools, especially the property to ride on, family who takes me to the places I need to go to get parts and allows me and my brother to have over 15 mowers at once... Even the general area I live in. If I still lived in Tampa I would've never even known this was a thing. I love the people here. They just genuinely want to help instead of using you to benefit themselves. I know I am very blessed in having what I have to be able to do this.

It’s always nice when people help with hobbies. I remember when my dad brought my tractor home one day, he never told me anything about it. His car was getting fixed so we met him at the local mechanics shop and there it was in the back of the truck... I tell ya I was grinning wider than a four lane. Gotta say, you guys are really lucky to have shops of your own (heated ones are truly minty) I’m glad that my family is nice to loan me space to park my machine inside, it’s nice to know that your stuff is protected that way. This is what I meant about the rambling. (lol)

Got a joke.

What’s the difference between a kohler courage and a horse drawn buggy?

You aren’t supposed to push a buggy.

Also: I told my Kohler courage a joke.

It cracked up...

On another note: am I posting too much?

my jank john deere fired right up as soon as it gets warm struggled to keep it running all winter. put a battery on my craftsman it fires right up on key now. and paid 150 bucks for 3 snapper rear engine mowers ones blown up but no holes in the block so far, one has no motor, and one has a mint 11hp briggs. motor i wanna convert one to use a go kart type motor and find new motors for the others one may end up parts only. the 11hp might be a temp motor for my mud mower mtd or perminent who knows

Hack for the snowblower guys out there. Shear bolts, put them in an altoid tin, and bolt/glue/screw to surface on blower. Change them on scene. Granted you’ll need a ratchet and a wrench if they are actual bolts but hey you won’t loose your shear pins. Please don’t put this on your vintage GT hoods though, that irritates me a wee bit.  Laughing

I drove my OG CraftsmanQuad to school a few times. I was the only one that had ever driven anything like that to school. It wasn’t a group planned thing, I just decided to have a little fun and see people’s reactions. They were awesome!

Hit the McDonald’s drive through on the way home too lol

We always keep extra shear pins on our tractors and baler. Though we don't buy the actual shear pins. We get grade 8 bolts lol!

If i didn't live 25 miles from town i would've drove mutt to school lol.

So here's another Hummer story. I forget what the last one was, but I think it was when the motor went.

Anyway, let's go back to the day we picked up the L111. I believe it had roughly 260K on the odometer then. So, we drive about 25-30 minutes to the guys house, load up the L111, turn around, and get back on the highway. About 5 minutes after getting on the highway, the car jerks and shifts into 3rd. "Uh oh." SO, we come to the next light, stop, and when it turns green, we start to move. Give it some gas, and that's when we realized she was slippin' worse than an oversized man on a muddy hill. It would take like 4 seconds to get to 10 MPH and over a full second to complete a shift. So we limp it home, unload the JD, and unhook the trailer. We end up driving it around for about a week or two like that. Stop lights and merging started getting dangerous because getting up to speed would take about 40 seconds... and you still wouldn't be at 60.

So anyway, we finally drive it an hour away to a transmission shop that has been in business for 30 years. They go ahead and rebuild the 260K mile trans (you're usually lucky if you get 150K out of them). I believe after about a week and $2K or $3K later, we had it back. "Awesome! New motor, new trans, new front end. That leaves axles, ECU, and transfer case." So we thought.

It couldn't have been any longer than 3 weeks after we had it back that we started noticing the reverse gear going out. THANK GOD a warranty came with the transmission rebuild. We put another 10K on the car in that condition. Reverse kept getting worse and worse the more we drove it. It could barely back itself out of a parking space and it wouldn't back up a hill to save it's life.

Also, at about this time, and this is an ongoing issue to this date, the electric diff locker is getting stuck on. So backing up and turning was impossible with the reverse issue.

Now we have to make an emergency trip to Florida with the trailer. So long story short we hook up the trailer, get up at 3 AM, pack the car, and hit the road in the pouring rain in 36 degree weather with like 30MPH winds. We couldn't see more than 10 feet in front of us coming through Jasper GA. So, rain the whole way through GA. We get to the FL line at about 9:30 in the morning. I think it was not long after that when the trans randomly shifted to 3rd for no reason. So we pull off at a truck stop, shut the car off, shift through all the gears, start it back up, and get back on the road. It's alright for about another 75ish miles. Then we had to do it again because it shifted back to 3rd. I think we had to do it a third time too. We finally made it to Tampa.

Drove it around that whole week in Florida. No problems besides the starter making really weird noises. So we leave a week later with a fully loaded trailer and this time the L110 and the rental total piece of absolute utter crap Toyota Crapry. We make it all the way past Atlanta... 500 miles issue free. It's apparently towing just fine.

I was in the Camry so I'm going off of what my brother told me now. Once they get on the north side of Atlanta, they felt something big let go. "BOOM," and apparently the car jerked super hard, shifted to 3rd and started lagging bad. From here no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't get it back to 4th gear. So 4th gear was completely gone. So they limp it up to NC and they're finally back in town. They are now about 3 miles from the house, and it starts jumping in and out of gear. Just like the MM did in the snow last year. Now they're coming down the driveway and everything is screwed up. They drive up the little hill and try to back in up under the portico. Nope. No reverse at all. So they drive through the yard and park on the cement pad and put it in park.

AND THAT'S ALL SHE WROTE. It died right in the driveway. It literally couldn't go another cm. LITERALLY. They put it back in gear to see what happens, and it wouldn't even try to shift. It was stuck in park and that was that. There wasn't even a neutral to roll it around. So we left it there and unpacked the next day. Pulled the trailer off and turned it around by hand too.

After a few days we have AAA on the way out to get the trans rebuilt again. We put it in reverse, nothing. We put it in drive, nothing. So we put it in Neutral to pull it with the golf cart. My dad gave it a little gas just to see what happened and the car started driving. Anyway, our last option was to put the transfer case in Neutral and then roll it which is what we ended up doing.

So, no 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear. No drive, no reverse, and pretty much no park and no neutral. Neutral somehow became drive. Anyway, AAA came and towed the car to the trans shop again. All free of course. 3 days later we have the car back and instantly my dad takes it on another trip to Florida to close on a piece of property and the day after he gets back we take it to Rockcrusher with the toys on the 16 foot beast of a trailer.

I gotta say, this time they did it right. It tows better than when it was brand new. It shifts like a dream. It will actually stay below 3K RPM and pick up speed on an uphill with a trailer. Yeah that may not be impressive to you guys but yall don't know what an H3 trying tow uphill is like. We had a 5 by 8 enclose trailer when we picked up the 18.5 Husqvarna and it was topping 4K RPM and losing speed the entire way up a super long hill climb.

SOOOO. I apologize for the long story, but hey, it's quite the story if you ask me. We're super happy with how the transmission is preforming now. Might put a little money into the cosmetics on it now. Anyway, sorry for the long post.

LOL. I just looked at the preview. This is DEFINITELY, the longest post I've ever done if you don't include pictures.

I had an 89 Mustang GT back in college. Trans went out on it, my dad took it to the trans shop while I was in class. Got it back, and they gave me a 500 mile warranty on the trans. Long story short, it started going out at 480 miles. My dad took it back to them to fix it. Just as he pulled in the drive, it hit 498. Guy was like, teenagers they hotrod these things and I just can't keep putting transmissions in them. My dad was like, He's in his mid 20's, and I have been driving it because he complained it was not fixed right within 100 miles. He honored the warranty and put in a new 92 mustang trans and it was good to go from there on. Lots of torque after, It would spin tires in 2nd and 3rd without trying much. It was automatic. Had to be careful on those wet roads!

Wish I still had that car....

@Murraymountain I bet the first time they rebuilt that transmission they didn't even replace half of it. Shops have a tendency to replace just enough stuff to fix something and still charge for a full rebuild. At least the shops around here. Most of the time they get away with it. You won't find out about it either, unless you bring it to an honest shop that takes it apart and tells you what they find.

Hate me some car shops. Can't trust those greasy suckers

I’m glad to have our local guy then. We were going in to pick up one of the vehicles (can’t remember which one) and the guy ahead of us was getting new tires, and he asked how much he owed for the alignment. Mechanics reply, “It didn’t need it.” Small thing, but always nice to see that kind of honesty.

Also browsing marketplace I saw something that will most likely infuriate the JD and Cub Cadet guys... this is...interesting I suppose. Off topic anything 2021 Edition! - Page 4 B80e5b10
