I found a troybuilt mower [22hp briggs 46 in cut] with peddle drive cruiss control [whatever that means??] I can get it to run only long enough to burn up what i pour in........It runs good for a few seconds, at times I can keep it running for a while if i cover the air intake with my hand.......
the fuel pump shoots fuel [not a lot of pressure].....but i have not ever messed with an engine with a fuel pump, so i don't know how they are supposed to work.......
I took the carb off and cleaned the bottom end and got the solinoid freed up..sprayed carb cleaner and blew with air......remove float and cleaned needle and seat.
put back together, gave the float the blow test......
same problem......so before i go all the way into the carb, I thought I would ask about the fuel pump....
I might add that the fuel line from the tank was plugged and hard as a rock in places...........and tank had a lot of crap in too........and no filter anywhere in the line..........I put the air hose to the fuel line and blew a hole in it....
I just bought this for something to keep me busy for a while any help with be appreciated

I'd definately start with new fuel line, clean the tank. May need to spray some carb cleaner through the fuel pump as it could have "ate" some of that crud too.

Sounds like the fuel pump SHOULD be okay from your description, they don't flow a whole lot to be honest, just enough to keep the float bowl filled. To find out if it's the problem or not unhook the pressure feed from the fuel pump (so you don't spit gas everywhere) and rig up a old fuel tank or something to gravity feed the carb.
I agree with @MightyRaze's suggestions and will add one more... the solenoid in the bowl although may appear to be working may actually not be, I had one that clicked and the plunger retracted when powered up but it was still hindering fuel flow somehow. I cut off the plunger, taped off the end of the wire, installed a fuel petcock and the problem was solved!
If you're still having a issue please post a picture of the engines model number and we'll go further in depth.

That was going to be my next suggestion. Be sure to have it first in line that way you can replace fuel filters without draining the tank.

Thanks for all the info......I bought a new fuel pump, and then tore the carb down.....the metering rods were all plugged and the holes going to the fuel inlet were plugged solid [i had to drill them]...when i went to put it back together I saw that the jets in the end of the plastic tube were gone [not me].....It won't run very good without them...........but it actuallly ran with full choke..........I am searching for carb, but I can"t find the exact number 40v ohv xbsxs7242 vfe:m .........also can't seem to find many that say for 22 hp......they skip 22 hp on a lot of the adds....
maybe simple answer is to buy the one that has the longest list of numbers???? what say you guys??

I've worked hard since i was a kid........i've found that an idle mind and body makes for a miserable death....not to mention the hardship on your family.......so lets keep it up the good work guys......
I ordered a carb from a seller on wally world and wally says everything is ok, it's on the way, but the tracking number puts it delivered half way across the state in durango....I can see the lady saying " honey what the heck do you need this for and what is it????? ..........the seller seems to think it's lost and guess what, OUT OF STOCK........the good news is that I tore into the carb again and found a couple more tubes to drill out and put back in and it ran, not real well it wants to load up for some reason, but it will run long enough to check the drive out...........so here is a question:
when i finally got it to smooth out I released the brake and killed it, set the brake, started it, but now the belts started turning??? did the pto or drive finally decide to kick in and is this the way it works until you depress the go peddle?? I am only asking because i have the steering torn up waiting for a bushing..............I sure wanted to step down on that peddle though

Check to make sure the belt guides/guards are in place and are not too close that they keep the belt engaged or far enough away to be ineffective. You could also have something hanging up or the linkage out of adjustment. So many little things can cause it but really as long as the belt isn't trying to grab and move the tractor then it's probably okay. I have a tractor that always spins the belt a little but it doesn't affect anything
I'm supposed to get my steer bushings today, so i will have steering, I can put it on the ground and give it a try and see how it operates and " IF" it operates I have only glanced at the belts so far, I've been concentrating on the engine and steering
I thought I would wait another day or two for the carb, it could be closer to home by now, they have given my money back and said if I happened to get the carb, don't bother to send it back......

well usps came thru for me today, i got my bushing in and now have good tight steering,I should get the bearings for the front wheels and the "power steering needle bearings" soon, maybe :-)
I needed a gas shut off so i went and got one while i waited patiently for the mailman, I found that i could cut the gas valve down to damn near off and make that engine run good enough to try the drive out.....the good news is that i have Forward low high and reverse but the only way to stop is to through it out of gear.....
the peddle has only about a half in. play in full down, the belt is hot and never stops all together..
if I had to guess I would say that the belt is too short, because there is so little travel in the peddle... let me know if that is a good guess.......if not I'm hear to learn........I did't study it too long, I had to have break from the heat...........thanks for any ideas

It's the wrong belt, that's a automotive rubber belt and won't slip as it needs to and the halves of the belt look like touching, find the model number of the tractor and it shouldn't be hard to find the proper belt.
one guy on youtube said that the belts have to be troy bilt or cub cadet belts they are narrower looking from the side of the belt not as fat........that would put them inside the pulleys a little farther and give more slack in the belt ......the belt and the pullys were hot after 5 minutes messing around in my drive way....
it's hard to say..........this machine looks like it has had pretty good care for it's age....the deck is in great shape......I'm still betting on it being the wrong belt........thanks for your help....

I emailed Jack"s small engines with the info, told him I was too old to get the wrong belts and knew he could find the right ones......I'm gonna replace both while I'm at it, if i go ahead and pull the body I'll give it a good power wash.........
I couldn't find the motor number until you told me where it was......then i read the zero with a line thru it as a "2".........until I looked again in the daylight.......
