speed limiters on cars/trucks

Just a useless topic for somethin that makes me wonder.

Ive driven alot of vehicles in my short life.

99 expedition
98 tahoe
98 dakota
03 f250
95 f250
98 ram 2500
07 ridgeline
2010 carolla
Etc.....

Ive taken almost all of them to top speed and the only one that cuts off before redline is the tahoe. The expy, carolla, both f250s, and the ridgeline all redlined w/o a limiter, WOT, The expy goes about 150, carolla rev limited in 4th at 115. Everybody always talks about speed limiters and im like wth??? Whats a speed limiter???

I personally dont know when the limiters were put in cars, but I bet the more newer cars have them. I know my dad's Raptor topped out at 110, but that was because the 35's weren't made to go any faster. The truck would hit 3500 rpms in 6th, and then just stop climbing mph wise

Im pretty sure limiters have been around since they started using computers in them. Raptor, hehe i want one. The newer cars definatly have them, i just havnt driven a new vehicle yet, but i might get a chance b/c my aunt just got a brand new jeep sahara edition, hehe, ideas ideas.

And we recently got another 99 expy and it doesnt have a limiter either, just tops out at the redline somewhere around 5k

Fastest ive got my parents 2008 GMC yukon up to was 125 and ran out of road, climbin good. (closed road )

Interesting thing I heard, someone said the old 22R yoda engines run out of code when you rev them to high. Not sure if thats true.

How can an engine with no computer run outta code? Unless you mean the 22RE? I had a couple 20Rs and a 22R. They'd rev to the sky if you let 'em. I didn't push the pickup truck ('84 Xtracab 4x4) too hard, but the 20R's (1976 and 1977 Celica GT and ST fastbacks), man, I ran them hard. Great cars...

The main thing that sux tho, is the ford speedos in the trucks stop at 100. From there on ya kinda gotta guess. Our expy gets goin pretty good once ya hit about 80.

I just read that the civilian crown vic/grand marquis cut off at 85. I had to laught at that cause ive maxed the speedo on my gmas without even tryin. Personally i think limiters are bs, used to protect us from ourselves

A speed limiter on a car is mostly like a governer on one of these small engine... But instead of being on the engine it's on the rear axle... And it's called a governer even on cars... So mostly if your wot in your car it will (for example) it will hit 125 then automatically slow the car down... Even without you taking your foot off the gas... But if you take the governer off instead if stopping at 125 it will stop at maybe idk 150...

But I've never noticed any newer cars limiting themselves, maybe I just never went fast enough. I think I had a 1994 or so field car that would hit the rev limiter pretty low spinning in mud, but other than that It was never a problem. I don't feel the need to cross 100mph too often. Takes too long to get up there, and to me not worth the risk of getting a ticket. The other thing is to make sure your tires are in good shape. I had the tread peel off the front tire of a 65 pontiac, I only got up to around 70-80. The tires didn't even look that bad, just some hairline cracks. I didn't realise they were bad, usually you don't look at the tires real close. For a big heavy car, it really shook the heck out of it till the tread finally came all the way off. You think the front of the car is gonna fall off.

Speed limiters exist, Toyota Tundras with the vvt 5.7 are limited to 110 . Its to prevent driveshaft & tire blowouts (both have speed ratings). Ford 6.0 powerstroke throw a overspeed code after 100.

most of the time to eliminate speed limiters just google down the ecu wiring find the wire for the vehicle speed sensor and cut it and drive on...will still have working speedometer and such but it will through a cel "check engine light" for vehicle speed sensor but it still will work it then wont send a reading back to the ecu and there for not able to limit the speed your after...done this on my maxima it just cut the fuel in half and power after 125 reducing the chance of hitting any faster...now too 140 mph its all there

All mine have them. Well, did have them. Duramax was 99, but it's been tuned, and limiter removed.

Have a 80 fairmont with a 88 5.0 in it. It shuts off at 110. Until you flip a disconnect switch...

I'm sure the equinox is limited. But it only has 1600 miles on it, be a while before I speed in it.

Most gm cars are 107 -110, most gm trucks are 99.

I rarely speed anymore. Darn near lost license at one point. Then I figured out if you don't speed, you don't get tickets. I have been known to blast the truck over 100 once in a while...

I kind of forgot a lot of you guys live out in the flat lands. Not many places to go over 100mph in new jersey without much traffic or chance of getting caught. Even on the highways around here, they have fairly tight curves every once in a while, and a lot of places the police are always hanging around. Nope...back roads and cornering technique around here more fun than top speed.

All I need is 1/4 mile to hit 100!

i dont drive too too fast but every now and then i like speed a little, driving like miss daisy all the time can hurt a vehicle some especially with catalytic converters not getting on them enough to through out some of those suds build up, nothing against elderly people but idk how many times when they came in with there vehicles where they never hit over 3000 rpm or drive over 55 mph there catayalitc converters where always stopped up every single time lol so most of the time id just go out and drive it hard come back all the sud was blowed out and they was good to go with some good lucas treatments

I made a vow that when i get a truck, the first thing imma do is a wot run. Gps it to see how fast it goes, then baby it the rest of its life, seems fair enough

My 94 F-150 with the 300 I6 and the five speed can can beat any automatic off the line, top end though is a different story, they are torque motors, not speed motors, my engine makes like 300 ft-lbs of torque at idle however only like 150-175 hp, indestructible engines though, 7 main bearings, gear timing similar to a briggs, and solid cast iron.

Bet stretch's truck (automatic) would give you all you could handle, off the line and top end.
