As long as you aren't doing clutch dumps and wheelies, it would run ok with stock pulley.  I've not really pulley swapped one that didn't throw the belt all the time.

If it's for nothing too serious try it out as it is then lock it if it's not good enough, I haven't even locked one of my tractors yet but have done plenty of serious riding. Mud, hills, sand, climbing over fallen trees, you name it! Lol

If you're running a VariDrive which I assume you are you can BUT if you pulley swap it's very difficult to find the right lengths of belts so it balances the system properly, don't get it bang on and it will never work right.

Refer to this thread from a couple of weeks ago when we were talking about it.
https://www.atltf.com/t4716-anyone-around-south-central-ky-or-northern-tn#127471

That video link I posted is the best way to get more speed out of your FNR and it would be locked at the same time so best of both worlds. In the end it would probably cost roughly the same but be less frustration because you wouldn't have to buy and try a thousand different belts or mess with belt guides/linkages ect.

@brainator but I just don't have that kind of equipment to convert it over so I was just working with what I have I wasn't going to mess with ther vari drive pulley just the rear and the engine pulley I was going to leave basically the way it is. but swapped the engine and the pulley on the transaxle for a lil fast but slower it rough places on the trails not very serious.

If you change one little thing, you mess with the VariDrive and how it works, it relies on a very delicate balance of the pulley and belt sizes and is ridiculously hard to dial in once you've changed anything. I've actually done it, it's cost me many, many hours of work and frustration and it's still not working perfect but it's getting there, I've thrown a good chunk of change at it too. If anything you would want to swap the engine pulley and front belt, bigger pulley grips the belt better so if you put a smaller pulley on the back you will probably have issues with the belt slipping, the small front pulley is prone to causing belt slip as it is.

I know you want to work with what you have but if you really want to pulley swap a tractor your best bet is to make a deal with your cousin for a tractor that has a geared transaxle, then it's much easier to pulley swap (front only plus a belt) but you will need to modify the belt guide to fit the new pulley.

I know the FNR is slow with a top speed of about 4MPH but it should still haul you through the woods and isn't that the goal?

We could help you identify the best of the bunch he has if you get over there and then post pics of geared tractors, he must have more than a couple in that group of 50ish, there could be a hidden gem in there somewhere?! The older the better and tractors with horizontal shaft engines will likely be better than others, the Murrays depending on what model can be decent. Some of the newer ones require alot of reinforcement but some of the older ones (some labelled as Sears) are really tough and a good base for an offroader.

If you want just a lil' more speed, then just the engine is easiest, but you can't go too much as you have to route the belt through the pedal controls.
