Interesting how John Deere and Wheel both used the pipe nipple in the block with the muffler clamped onto it.  I wonder if the mufflers are the same?

What did the gasket set run you?  Where did you get it?

My Uncle got the gasket set from Napa, I'm not sure what thw cost was. Seems to be pretty similar to the one I got when I re-built my K321.

Suburban with an Onan did the same, but that is probably a carryover from the deer's since they both used onan at the time.

Ah right, I've never seen one like that before. Seems like a simple way to do an exhaust.

Yeah it's nice becasue I didn't have to worry about removing a siezed pipe fitting from the block.

Yeah, mine had a similar setup. I'm thinking of using it with the Yanmar, too.

Made some more progress on the ol' 10 horse yesterday.

New head gasket in place:

project - John Deere 110 Project - Page 2 20180610

Did a basic head clean up:

project - John Deere 110 Project - Page 2 20180611

Should be good.

project - John Deere 110 Project - Page 2 20180612

Got the head all back on and tourqued to the proper spec using the proper pattern:

project - John Deere 110 Project - Page 2 20180613

Some tin work back on:

project - John Deere 110 Project - Page 2 20180614

Battery tray and fuel tannk mounted up!

project - John Deere 110 Project - Page 2 20180615

Then, after checking operation of the fuel pump and some cranking, I got 'er to fire up!! Runs pretty decent so far, no knocks or bad noises. There's a video of it starting up for the first time on my channel too. I guess I just gotta start figuring out a way to rig up a belt and clutch, shouldn't be too bad hopefully. Let me know what ya think!

Nice, I love the sound of those K series Kohlers! Cylinder bore and valves don't look too bad, seems to be in pretty good condition inside.

Yeah me too Matt! This one apears to have what looks like a homemade muffler on it too and it had a kinda deep exhaust tone to it, pretty cool. Also yeah the upper end is definitely in pretty good shape, haha.

Seems like the connecting rods are the weak point of these older engines. Good to know it doesn’t make any scary sounds

Sounds good. In the pic the intake valve was a little up. That could be positioning. Does it fit good in the seat?

Haha yeah it's good that there's no knocks or anything. Also Mighty the valves do fit down in their seats pretty well, might just be the angle of the picture. It definitely has good enough compression, haha.

That's good! Like I mentioned it could have just been in the part of the cycle for it to be partially up. Looks to be a good engine!

Not too much to show, but getting things sorta figured out for a clutch setup. Also noticed that the pulleys didn't line up because of the variable speed, but since we're just running a straight belt the pulleys have to line up. I actually found a double pulley with a 1" keyed bore that was a bit larger that the original engine pulley. I just had to make some spacers to line the pulleys up and slide it on!

project - John Deere 110 Project - Page 2 Screen23

project - John Deere 110 Project - Page 2 20180634

Put some Ant-Seize on the crank journal too, don't need it getting stuck on there. Haha. Hopefully soon I can get the clutch figured out and get some pictures of that too!

Looking good. I hate stuck pulleys, always good to use a bit of anti seize to keep them from rusting on. Getting nearer to a test drive Smile

So did you check that head for flat or sand it flat?  Any signs that the headgasket was leaking on the block?

The head gasket definitely wasn't leaking and I used the proper torque value and sequence, so it should he alright.

Cool, thanks Thunder! I'll keep that in mind.

Little more work on the old JD today. Still needing a transaxle pulley so no more progress on the clutch, but I did manage to rig up some brakes.

Having it up on the hoist makes it a hell of a lot easier to work on, haha.

Here's the linkage all welded up:

Stuck a spring in there to bring the brakes back to the disengaged position.

The linkage all mounted up.

Fits up in there quite nice!

Works great! The handle doesn't have to move very far to lock the brakes up either.

Disengaged:

Engaged:

Should work great!

Looks good! What kind of brake caliper does she have? Is it built onto the transaxle or is it an external one like on my 2300?

Thanks! It's the just the standard drum and band setup, mounted on the side of the transaxle case. Seems to still work pretty good.

Oh ok. I guess I got lucky with my disk brake setup, it has the same caliper that was on my go kart. Can just cut new pads out of car pads rather than having to try and resurface the brake band lol.
