I am going to pick up this peerless 915 transaxle today

Peerless 915 Img-2010

I know it might not be the best option out there but it was either this or a Spicer that was available in my area.
The Spicer looked like a toothpick compared to this one so I am happy enough to have anything better

That being said, how do I get the most life out of this one and what are some things to look out for.
It will be completely serviced and I see that it has some slots for bearings? Which bearings I don't know.
Are there any upgrades that could be done to make it work better?
I would probably run it with corn head grease as that's readily available for me.

Any and all tips would be more than welcome

Your terrain have lots of mud and hills?  Lock it!  Especially for hill climbing for safety.
Mostly flat with shallow mud?  No sense locking it.

Peerless manual:
Tecumseh / Peerless Motion Drive System (wfmfiles.com)

Also, on the bearings.  Not sure if the same, but unless I am mistaken, that is a 3/4 shaft.  I wonder if the same bearing as the MST would work?  Someone with 915 knowledge would need to jump in.

The MST series transaxle by Peerless gear provides recesses for bearings, but doesn't include them. To strengthen your transaxle, order two bearings and install. SIZES: SAE: 6203-2RS-3/4" METRIC: 19.05x40x12mm

Thanks, iam kind of split in the middle when it comes to locking it.

We have rain 6 months and are without for 6 months.
That being said if there's any mud it's the nastiest stuff you've ever seen.

Iam kind of leaning towards leaving it open for now and just looking what problems I run into

Wow I didn’t realize it until now how little information is out there about the 915, do you know how many speeds it is?
EDIT: found a manual for it http://www.wfmfiles.com/download/Tecumseh-Peerless_Motion_Drive_System_-_Transmissions_&_Differentials(691218).pdf

915 and 940 arent rare but theres indeed little to be found about them.
That being said I have seen some that were open and they don't look all that bad

To strengthen the case you can replace the case bolts with longer ones and put nuts on the other side.

Actually that was something I was meaning to ask, does anyone know the size of these bolts?

I would most likely have to order them from the u.s. since they are imperial?
Or just drill them out and put some 12.9 bolts in

That's something you may want to determine on your own, my 910 has metric hardware but I know that really old units use SAE (imperial). No hardware stores around?

I'll drill it out I guess.. make my life easier.
For now I have put the pulley in a bath of oil and mineral spirits.
I'll be taking it to work tomorrow and do some work there

Are those grease zerks on the bottom side near the transaxle case ends?

Yes sir, didn't know that was a thing either.

Came from a Toro so I did some backtracking if I could find the same Toro gear in the u.s. and they have the stub but not the zerks..

Edit: Toro 10-32 rider is what it's apparently from and they do have the zerks standard.
Amazing idea to have the zerks there though

Whoa hold up, what is this?

I just found out our John Deere GX95 has this same transaxle. Grease fittings and all. However it doesn’t have what I pictured above.

It's called a bearing in the catalog if I am correct.
Presumably to reinforce it

Looks like it's more or less made to take up any slack in case the gear wants to jump

New o-ring I did leave the old one behind there because there was a slight gap and this seems to be quite snug

Peerless 915 Img20225

Cleaned and filled up with grease, I need to receive parts anyway and this way it can settle out a bit before i put sealant on.
Peerless 915 Img20227

Lid closed temporarily, bearing are on their way from Germany and the axle seals from the u.s.
Peerless 915 Img20226

As far as drilling and putting longer bolts in Ive decided to do that in situ at the end so I'll get the best allignment.
First close all the bolts and then drill them one by one.
