Went for a pressure lube oppy because it’s the only oppy I have that I know to have a good starter and coil. Realized I’m gonna need an oil filter relocate kit to keep the belt out of the filter. Went ahead and ordered that.

Made up two engine mount brackets out of some 1/4x2 angle
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8416

Transferred the holes and drilled them and bolted the engine up. Reused the original right rear engine mount hole.

My idlers got here today so I made up a couple belt keeper brackets for them

Roughed in a belt system

Made these bumpstops. Probably need a little reinforcement.
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Image12

Traded a mower guy out of Louisville some rims to mount my new bighorns on so I cleaned up the beads and am working on mounting the new bighorns.

Consider it an expansion reservoir in lieu of a normal trans vent lol!

Made this thing out of a chunk of UHMW so I could put a collar on the steering shaft and stop it from pulling out of the dash. There was only sheet metal holding it in and it’s easy to rip the whole steering shaft out of the steering block.
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8511

Bolted on. Seems to work good
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8510

Added a front axle bolt in place of the regular front axle pin. Tightens things up nicely. Shaved the head down on it a bunch to clear tie rods.

Working on belt stuff tonight. You can see some keepers I added in there.
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8513

Decided to weld tracks for the belt inside of the belt cover.
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8514

You can kind of see where they ended up lol.
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8515

Cleaned the carb, it was nasty, and this engine fired right off! Clutch seems to be working pretty ok, we will see on the first test drive tomorrow.

Got home from work today and threw a 3D printed pod filter adapter on.
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8517

Took her out for her first test drive! Realized the clutch needed some work. It was like an on/off switch with no slip, and wouldn’t roll back in gear on a hill
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8519

So I set off to making a wrap around guard for the engine pulley, as that’s where the problem seemed to come from.
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8518

Wound up with a guard that uses the engine side cover bolts. Seems to work ok! Clutch is still a little grabby but that may be from the pulleys having paint on them still. Gonna leave it for now and work on other stuff.
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8516

Looks like I’m pretty close to technically being finished, but I am far from done. Razz

Found a seat mount from an LT16. I ran one of these on budgie actually and liked it a lot. The fender bolts lined right up but I’m thinking I’ll add another bolt up front to spread out the load on the fender.

Wired back up from scratch. That wire loom is a huge pain! This stuff is like NASA grade wiring compared to the 8 years of birds nest on mutt.
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8523

Thinking the belt is gonna need some support or something ahead of the trans pulley so it doesn’t slap so much. Every time the belt slaps it lurches the tractor. Once the belt stops slapping, everything releases like it should.

Took her out for a 2am test drive. Everything seems ok! Clutch needs just a bit more fine tuning but it’s 99% there.
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8527

My other headlight burnt out so I put in this junky LED. Same one that was in both budgie and mutt at one point or another.

Hahahaha! Actually it went fine, luckily enough. And my stock brakes work pretty good.

It does have sort of an appeal to it! Don’t have to worry about it packing with mud either!

Drilled the holes for the tie rods in the right location
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8528

Made up some tie rods out of 3/4” bar and some 1/2” heims. They’re kind of overkill but mutt and the gt6k both use this size so it’s nice to keep all my spares the same size.
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8529

[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8530

I also filled my front tires with 3.5 gallons each of windshield washer fluid. I learned after buying all those jugs that windshield washer fluid has methanol which can mess up the tires after a few years. Oh well, oopsiedaisies. Anyway the extra weight up front made all the world of difference and she handles much better now and is less flippy.

This isn’t so much of a skid plate as it is a big deflector for the transmission mount, but we’ll just call it a skid plate lol. Two pieces of angle iron drilled and tapped to bolt into the frame
[c] [24] RROD’S 414-8 BUILD - Page 2 Img_8611

A 3/16 plate welded between them

Simple enough!

Took her out for a night shakedown. Did great! I did get a little too rowdy on a rock and roll it backwards on me, but I came out just fine and the tractor was just covered in oil and needed the dent from my elbow popped out of the hood. The balance point on this tractor is very different than mutt or the GT6k, figured that out the hard way!

Wheel horses do seem to behave differently. Glad you are OK.

The wheel horse proved itself to be a pretty good rig at GER. She’s great in the tight trails and the off camber stuff, but the balance point before flipping backwards still feels awfully low. Not like a craftsman at all. I’ll have to see what I can do about that.

In the rock garden

This is the foxhole. Once me and @redzz02 dropped into it we realized we made a pretty big mistake lol! Pictures just don’t show how steep things actually are. We managed to climb out though!

Picked up a John Deere swept axle from  @Hot Lap at GER. These have 1” spindles and I think move your front wheels around 2” forward. Should be a nice upgrade. You do have to make your own tie rod arms though.

Added these craftsman seat springs as bump stops for the seat. May or may not keep them there

Had the belt throw for the first time driving around the yard, came off the trans pulley. Added these two keepers, top one to keep the belt from walking off the side and the bottom one to keep the belt off the pulley more when I push the clutch in, so the tractor (hopefully) rolls back in reverse better

Mrs. Rich spent a few hours on the WH today, getting familiarized with mowering activities. The WH seemed very friendly to a beginner rider, and the clutch was plenty smooth. The governed oppy makes it easy to not worry about throttle and just focus on your clutching fundamentals.
