Well, it does have to to with lawn tractors in a way, but you can tell the major grass cutting season is done for the year in my part of the world. Those $200-$300 overpriced almost parts machine lawn tractors have come down now to $50-$100. (unfortunately hydros) Went the past 3 months and the cheapest mower was about 250 in the OKC craigslist. The low end guys are starting to come out of the "I bought a new one and need to get rid of this one" posts. :-) Time to start hard-core parts watching! To the guys in chat the other night. The RARE briggs opposed horizontal engine that showed up on craigslist, disappeared in less than 2 hours.

Craigslist hardly has any good deals in my area anymore. MUTT itself was one of the few I've seen. It seems facebook has a lot of good deals nowadays, plus I can set a thing to check for tags in certain for sale posts like "lawn mower" or "mini bike" Plus my local supplier puts ads on facebook now, rather than craigslist like he used to.

Too bad about that opposed Briggs, not a terrible deal for $100 or whatever it was. That MTD looks sweet as well! Looks to have an actual transaxle of some sort as well! How much for that rig mighty?

I don't know. I think with some research it has a 2300 variant in it. Much like the old murrays. He wants 175 for 2 tractors 2 pushers and weed eater engines but he will sell individual. I'm guessing the 75-100 range. If I wasn't about to head out for vacation soon, I'd jump on it if he still has it. Frame and Trans appears to be the same as my murray.

I'd bet it has a Fnr variant with the hi/lo and 1" axles. Prolly has varidrive too. Dunno how tough they are

That sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Would probably make for a great project.

Its an actual transaxle. i have the slightly newer version of that same mower. same deck, engine, and everything. Except mine has a 5 speed peerless 801. that has the 4 speed peerless (similar to the peerless under the sears, just without the high and low)
At least i believe that is what it is. Vari drive didnt come around until the mid 90s, did it?

Those transaxles in the Sears garden tractors weren't Peerless made, I'm pretty sure Roper manufactured them.
That MTD tractor would be an awesome machine I bet, especially with that heavy trans under it.

Yeah, I was just saying that the hi and lo transaxles in the Sears were made by Roper. This one must have the 2300 in it like you said, judging by that shift pattern. I never knew they put those in the MTD's of that era. Seeing how it's a vertical shaft oppy it must have a twisted belt setup.

Zero turns still havent dropped here, but there are more popping up for sale. Probably wont get a good deal on one till theres 20" of snow on the ground.
