Starting Problems

I have a briggs 19.5 two cylinder that iḿ have problems getting started . If the spark plugs are in it the its ruff turning over with a fully charged battery even tried jumping if with a truck battery but still nothing . Then when i take out spark plug its turn over fine. I think it might be a bad starter but i don't want to spend the money until i know for sure. Any suggestions?

You could take the starter apart and clean it/oil the bushings. Sounds like it is creating a lot of drag.

Another thing is I'm pretty sure those bigger oppys have automatic compression releases in them (I could be wrong) but if so maybe yours isnt working properly. Since you said it's fine if the plugs are out that would make sense.

Good chance its the starter. Best bet to test is to rob one from a good starting engine, swap and test.

I'd do like Doug said. These oppy starters are pretty bad about the bushings drying up or locking up and such. I've had to replace the starter gears on them more than once, and take em apart to lube up the bushings a few times. It's a pretty easy task if you've done it before. Hardest part about it is getting the brushes to stay apart when you're putting it back together, but there's a trick for that.
