Rugg rat mower

I acquired a Rugg mower recently.  Came with an 8hp that didn't run, A frozen mower deck, missing body and other little things.  
Kinda looked like a rat rod so thats the direction I'm gona go.
Love this steering rod.

here it is with the 12hp shoe horned in.

Here its stripped, seat bracket chopped, and MTD running boards mounted.

This is gonna be a really cool build, definitely following this one!

By the way that drag link is fail thread material for sure, hahaha.

That neat, I had the frame to one of those with the rear diff and front axle.

Wow.... that steering link.  Looks like a fun project!

Decided to use the original engine plate VS building my own.
I trimmed the sides down becouse I won't be using the raise and lower system. I'll be welding it. And being 1/8" thick, its plenty strong.
I found my jigsaw went soo much faster than my death wheel.

Went and removed the Allison differential. Going with a live axle. It will give me a smaller ring gear and disk brakes.
Still playing with the placement of the running boards. Next is ggona be welding in the engine and trans plate.

Decided to lower the frame some. I didn't like the stock height. Even got the engine/trans plate mounted.
And I mounted the wheels ill be using.

Little more progress.  Mocked up the engine and trans. Looks like I can move forward to the front end.

whered you get the axle, and where are you gonna get the disc brakes from?

The axle came out of a China 49cc mini quad. Im taking the rear brakes, chain and chain ring from it. Im going to use the quads caliper and brake line. I ordered a master cylinder to use it with a pedal.

And the moment we have all been waiting for. ( well some of us)
The front end. Front axle has been fully welded, spindles modified,  and temporarily hung. ( still gotta clean up the welds)
But she's sitting on all 4 wheels.

Small update. I got the 12hp engine assembled and running. Stuck a 10hp head on it and going to do custom exaust. Tempted to shave the eyebrows and polish the ports.
Finnaly ended up spending money on this project. Bought a chain. Soo im into this project $10 over the $40 I payed for the mower.

Just to show you how I've got my throttle cable set up.
I'm using part of the original choke braket as a guide.
Toss in some bike brake components and some random springs, and this is what I came up with.

Man, haven't seen the rest of it, but at the rate you're going I'd say you could've entered this thing in the Build-Off.

I had thought about it. But being as I have no body work and it may not get any, I figured I wouldn't bother.
I'm also going so fast becouse I pretty much have everything to build this. Just short on time, with family, work and stuff.

Well I got the tie rods welded up and mostly installed. Steering goes 1/4 turn to full lock from center. I threw some primer on them for now.

Well I got the steering working right. Had to take it off the table so I could do the wiring harness ( cant access the tables other side too well)
And since the before shot was in the grass, I snapped a pic to document the progress.
Oh and I cut and mounted the running boards.

Small update. Made some mounts and got the seat mounted.  And started on foot controls.

Got the clutch and brake systems fabricated and installed.




Finnaly got to the point where I can install the engine.

That thing looks fun!! Awesome build!

I've always wondered when I'd see someone use a cable for a clutch linkage. Super neat.

Weak spot on those Foote transmissions seems to be the forward input bevel gear. I have one where that gear is stripped. Reverse is in good shape though. I recall it being bentonite filled, so no real lubrication from the factory.

If you're within my side of the US I could ship it to you for a couple bucks lol. I'm never gonna use it. You'd have a good case, at least.

Small update. Getting close to taking this for a ride.  
Took the stock automotive vbelt pully off the transmission,  drilled out the spot welds and knocked the center out.
I then cut up a stock engine pully and welded the small pully to the center I got from the old one.
As for front pully im going to try to use the large pully from the stock one. Let's hope this isn't too much of over drive for the transmission.
 

Took the transmission off and tore it open. Found tons of grease. But none of it was touching the gears.  So I cleaned it out,  re greased it and added some gear oil to make a slurry.
Painted it, and reinstalled it. Measured and bought a belt for it.
Ordered a battery and welded up a holder for it.

Looking good! I bet that is a blast to do donuts with.  What top speed are you aiming for?
