Got this old tiller from a buddy for my garden. Believe it's a 5hp briggs and I'm assuming these carbs are cheap enough to just buy a new one than rrebuilding. but I'm stumped on the pull start. Anyone happen to know what type of recoil starter would work with this? It's the very first thing I want to address because I know I. Going to be pulling that string alot and I dont want to have to fight manually rewinding it every time. Seen it run few years ago so hopefully I can get her going.

Looks like it got pulled off. It looks to be one of the dog-eared style cups.

Pull start came in today and fits and works perfectly. Only cost 17 bucks after tax. Now its to find a couple bolts that fit and possibly throw the carb in the ultrasonic cleaner before i buy a new one. Snow storm coming in so all projects at a hault til the weekend at least. But it gives me time to start selecting seed varieties and get my grow room up to par. Will update wwhewwhen i get it into the shop aand assess the repairs needed!

You look to have enough provisions to clock that pull start a one left or turn it to pull from the tank side. That will help you avoid that hole. I riveted one I had several years back when I clocked mine almost 180 to the other side.

Yea I been worried about the one hole that seems to have been yanked out. But the other 3 holes are still there and un damaged.

Those carbs are usually pretty easy to clean. Usually the tanks are dirtier than the carbs. Thing is, the throttle will wallow out the hole in the carb and make them run lean. Also the tanks will warp and leak around the carb. I fought with a 5hp on a go kart for a long time lol.
Looks like a couple of 10-32 bolts would bolt that up fine. I would just take the cowl to TSC and try some botls lol. I sold a pile of those 5hp for nothing last year.

Fortunately the hardware that came with it fits the factory mounts on the engine cover. But the one hole is bent as if someone ripped out the metal insert while trying to start it. So i figured i would just haller it back flat and just put a nut and washer on the backside of the cover for that hole. Hoping to get this thing running this weekend so it's ready to go when we get a warm day to get the gardens tilled. Should have done this in the fall but I'm a bit of a procrastinator lol

Got it running decent without even cleaning the carb. Drained old gas, put fresh fuel in the tank, installed the recoil and let er rip! Prob just going to get a new carb and will need a new throttle cable but its good enough to get my tilling done for now!
