On a weedeater the crankcase is essentially a supercharger, it adds a little bit of boost. At the end of the stroke the boosted air pushes the exhaust out. (Or at least most of it.) And that air is already mixed with fuel, that gets compressed, sparked, the cylinder comes down compressing the air in the crankcase which then gets forced into the combustion chamber, forcing the exhaust out.

I believe on the Detroit diesels the blower forces the exhaust gas out and then fresh air in, and then the injector goes off when the compression is ready, but I could be wrong. Always loved those motors, I wanna shove one in a ‘77 F250 someday.

@TechnoChicken that's not a bad way to explain it at all! The crankcase is definitely pressurized (by the downward travel of the piston) and how the fuel gets pushed up into combustion chamber via the "transfer port". The supercharging effect is actually created by the sound waves from the combustion bouncing back and forth in the expansion chamber, the "pipe" is tuned in a way that the sound wave bounces off the piston just before it exposes the combustion chamber and *helps* pull out the exhaust gasses and with it a small amount of fresh air/fuel mix hence the oil that will soak a dirtbike mufflers packing. It works most efficiently at a cetain RPM the pipe is tuned for and why alot of 2 strokes are very peaky with a narrow powerband.

2 strokes are the best, I wish I could put one in my car! Lol

Thank you for that. That makes it a little less scary.

Took a massive scrap load early this week (including the Death Trap. I finally just decided to send it off to its death. It’s officially gone now). 3400 lbs all in all. Came out to $170. 5 cents a pound.

Exactly, the boost is just done with the blower instead of the crankcase. Actually not really sure why they don't use those anymore, the 2 stroke diesel negates most of the inefficiency of the two stroke.

I believe GM cited increasing efficiency/air quality regulations and the comparatively low (as compared to a similar HP engine) torque, gotta give em the beans to get any power out, and I believe that for NY at least after ‘92 diesel exhaust opacity requirements went from 70% opacity to 40%, which is definitely hard on a Jimmy.

Running a 6-71 in an OTR truck you’d be lucky to get 4 mpg. They’re my all time favorite engine, and I’d like a 361 Brockway with an 8v92 in her someday, (which, BTW, new project announcement soon lol)

Has anyone put a 7-8 tire on a 6.50-8 rim or a 10-12 on a 10.5-12 rim? I guess my question is how much of a pain in the butt is it going to be to put bigger tires on a smaller rim or vice-versa

I haven’t, but there’s a fella on here with a GT6000 that did, can’t think of his name but the tractor rolled over about 6 months ago. The tires fit well and looked good to my eye.

Easy to put a wider tire on a narrower rim.  It's putting the narrower tire on the wider rim that is hard.

Fronts on Dirty Rat are 20x7-8 on a 5x8 wheel. Easy peasy.
My spare rear wheels/tires are has 24x10-12's on a rim that had 23x10.5-12.  One wasn't too bad, the other fought me half the day due to being squished for transport.  Couple tie straps, grease and turning up my air regulator on the compressor to 120.  I was able to get it with some wrestling.

Usually a GT6k and rolled over I think @RichieRichOverdrive, but this time I think you may be thinking @AllisKidD21 maybe? But, probably Rich. LOL

Yup, rolled over sounds like me. I run a lot of 10” wide tires on 8s, they seat real easy. Currently the GT6k has 26x12-12s on 10” wide rims, mutt has 25x11-8 mudlites on 8” wide rims, which kind of actually sucks as the tread profile is super rounded. If your tires are more than about 2” wider than the rim it starts to screw up the profile of the tire, makes it more rounded. This makes it bite more on softer surfaces but loses tread contact and therefore grip on hard surfaces like rocks and roots. 26x11-12 bighorns and 10” wide rims have proven to be a super good combo, nice flat tread contact for grip on rocks. I tried 26x10-12 executioners on 10” wide rims and didn’t really like how it made them look. Sidewalls were puffed out in the center instead of straight. May not be the same for other tires of the same size though.

Well that was a tangent lol!

I have a small surprise for you all tonight...

Selectable lockers and how to pull it off is a topic that's come up several times here (before my time) and is something that was always in the back of my mind, anyone else? I'm actually working on a custom built machine (a Janick 1500) that digs a trench and lays wire at the same time (needs new axle bushings/seals/filter ect.), it runs a TuffTorq K62 hydro with a selectable locker so I can show everyone the guts because I had to open it up!

LockedOff Topic Anything 2024 - Page 8 20240312

UnlockedOff Topic Anything 2024 - Page 8 20240313

Several 1/4" steel pins slide into the one spider gear to make it happen, pretty cool in my books! As someone who has operated these on a daily basis and to their full potential I can confidently say that they're solid and that locker is smooth as butter to engage/disengage, too bad it's in a hydrostatic...

I always wanted to experiment with transaxle running a dual chain drive to a split axle joined with an electric clutch. It’s already rated for the engine horsepower, so it’d be a pretty simple electronic locker. Dunno how well it would work though.

Alternatively, for tractors with the fender room, you could set that up above the existing transaxle.

Another option is this ratcheting LSD that was an aftermarket on model Ts. It’s called a peatman differential, and was manufactured by the Judy company. Probably would be something a fella could machine with enough patience, dunno how well it’d work though.

Ouch! That seems rather unpleasant.

If a bolt doesn’t break suddenly and aggressively enough to cause knuckle or finger injury, was it really tight?

Methinks not. 🥴

We were given this boat about a month ago and I wanted to share. Has a title, all the registration from the past, original title, a running motor and an identical spare motor, and a very good hull floor and even a trailer with good tires. Can’t believe it was free. It’s a 1977 Aristocraft Nineteen. 120 HP Mercruiser 4cyl. I think it’s basically a GM 4 cylinder.

Off Topic Anything 2024 - Page 8 Img_0852

Got it stripped out at this point and washed. Still need to really scrub it but my grandpa will be back up here soon and he and a friend that’s coming with him were on boats all their life and we’re going to restore it this summer and try to have it on the water. It runs very well. Definitely has a list of issues but I’m not complaining at all for a free boat.

Off Topic Anything 2024 - Page 8 Img_0855

Best part was seeing the lights work AND it has a CB radio that WORKS.

Off Topic Anything 2024 - Page 8 Img_0854
Off Topic Anything 2024 - Page 8 Img_0853

Anyway, I’ll make another post when she’s all done up and looking pretty and probably one more for her maiden voyage. Last time it was on the water was sometime between 1998 and 2001. That’s where the registration stops.

I got my learner's permit recently! Once I get my license the lt1000 will become an offroad focused build (I think)
Speaking of jeeps I am getting a TJ that has sat for a while. Its wiring harness is currently sitting in the passenger seat. The interior is in pieces so its gonna be fun getting it back together and running lol!
